Feng Shui and Children: A New York Feng Shui Consultant's Thoughts
For many years I have noticed the sensitivity of children in all things related to Feng Shui. They are particularly aware of their surroundings and instinctively know what colors soothe them. For years I have advised my Feng Shui Clients on Long Island and in Manhattan to allow children to choose their own paint colors (within reason, of course) and to give them a hand in decorating...with a Feng Shui point of view in mind.
Children are extremely sensitive and often can see, hear and mostly FEEL things that we cannot. Perhaps because they are so young and open they can feel the energy more. We live in a vibrational world and are surrounded by energy all the time.
I was called recently for a Feng Shui Consultation in Oyster Bay Long Island in New York primarily because a lovely couple had purchased a home about a year prior. They spent a lot of time making some lovely changes to the home but had become concerned about their daughter who was not sleeping well and had become nervous and unsure of herself.
She also was afraid in this home and although time had passed, she had not adjusted. They noticed it particularly upstairs and after a time my client began to feel uneasy in one particular room she was working on. They were used to guests staying with them and this room was to be the guest room. My client began to notice that when she attempted to do anything in that room she would often begin to not feel well...and would stop.

Two people had also stayed in the room although it wasn't finished and they too, felt uneasy. She looked for a Long Island Feng Shui Consultant and called me and we spoke at length.
We went to her lovely home in Oyster Bay recently. It was open and inviting and freshly painted. Neither I nor Laura felt anything in there.....until we went upstairs. I can only describe the feeling both of us had as a "pressure." We both glanced up to see if anything was OVER us to account for this heaviness and it was a pull down to an attic space.
Things stored in your attic hang over you and I had no doubt this is what they were experiencing. When I asked what was stored up there I was told that a close friend had passed; not knowing what else to do with all the belongings he had left to them, they had stored it in the attic.....directly over both her daughter's room and the guest room. I suggested until they could go through it to move it immediately. They had an outside storage shed and moved it while we were there.
Laura climbed up to thoroughly bless the attic.
I wasn't at all surprised that their young child felt it first, I have seen this sensitivity before and with my own children as well. When your child is reacting to something, I'm hopeful that you'll listen, even if it doesn't seem to make sense at the time. A child's intuition is very powerful.
My most recent email from this lovely Long Island client was to thank me again. Everyone was sleeping well and their child was no longer afraid. And several people had used the guestroom, all felt fine. Children often feel things we don't. They see things we often don't. They are sensitive little beings who are much more open to energy and are often not "acting up" as a parent may think they are. And they need to be heard.

What a great story! I have 6 children, and I have noticed that they are much more spiritually in tune! I'm glad that you were able to help this family.
Wow, that is so amazing. I often heard that children sense things that we do not. Thanks for sharing Carole!
It is so amazing Carole that something so heavy above like that effects the whole energy of the room. I agree with you about the higher sensitivity of children to the world around them.
Hi Carole...Perhaps it is because in some ways children are not as complex as we are and I mean that in a very positive way. We are so caught up in does and don'ts and yeses and nos, things that do not seem to hinder children from just feeling and accepting.

Hi Carole...What a interesting story and successful experience you had with your client, Great Post !Thanks for sharing your experience with us all, I know I learned something New. Nice to hear You helped another client, I bet she and her family are very pleased with you
Cheers, have a great day!
Carole ~ I love how you figure out these things that are affecting people in their homes! I'm sure the family is relieved and can now enjoy their whole house!
I include the children (or at least their feelings) when I am doing an interior decorating job. If they are little ones, I take them into consideration when putting together a plan (nothing they can get hurt bumping into) and for older children, have them participate if their room is involved; they feel so important. It is their home too, and I wholeheartedly agree in letting them help in decorating their own rooms (no black walls!).
Carole,
Another amazing story. I do believe children are much more "in tune" feeling, hearing and seeing things adults do not. Is it their innonence?
Carole, I learn so much from you, we had a child that use to have night terrors. We removed all the nija turtle stuff and they went away. It was weird, but it worked. I agree children pick up things and catch things before they are taught.
Carole--I love these stories!
We moved to our home over a decade ago. It was a remodeled farm house with several outbuildings. The original owner had passed and the remodeler who sold us the home had not remove many of the belongings. The first year was horrible...but when we had the garages completely emptied of the abandoned stuff, we felt so much better. And better still when the remodeler removed an old school house from the neighboring property to which many more of the belongings were housed. I had felt at the time that the pressure was removed but didn't know why.
I hope your client and her daughter feels much better now too.
Hi Carole,
Good post! It is so amazing what children pick up and feel. I know with 2 of my kids they use to talk about the wildest things and we could never figure out where it was coming from.
I'm with you on this as well! My children and my pets.....they always had mannerisms showing me something they felt uneasy about. Intuition is funny that way.
I think that much of what is considered imagination or fancy is really the mind working before the world has weighed in and skewed its natural working. It is wonderful that you were not only able to determine the cause of the personality shift in the child and the uneasiness of the guests, but also remedy the situation. Your clients must have earned some seriously good karma points to get your help.
Carole. You are fantastic! All my life I was looking to children in amazement for their impeccable instinct and sensitivity. I remember once I was reading a bed time story to my 4 year old nephew about a fairy land... and suddenly he started moving his eyes and head around looking at something invisible... I asked him what was it and he said: Wow, do you see all those butterflies in the room? What butterflies? I asked... and than he took the time to describe in details the colors and shapes of his vision... Sure enough after I turned the page... HERE THEY WERE! beautiful drawings of butterflies exactly the way he described them - colors, sizes...everything_
Kids are AMAZING!
Pam, SIX? How in the world do you have time to blog? I know children are very in tuen, some people may not realize it.
Cristal, Children--and pets. I am going to do a post soon on Pets, they both never cease to amaze me.
Gary, The energy is so strong in some spots you almost can't NOT feel it. But I'm glad they're doing better.
Kate, You're so right. Remember how we used to blurt out things that were true until we learned they were unkind? I think sometimes we don't pay enough attention to our children's feelings or think they are just "acting up."
Fred, Thank you and yes they are very happy...and I'm always so glad to hear that.
Kathy, I'm glad to hear that. Years ago in Feng Shui there were only certain colors we were supposed to use for children's rooms, mostly blues and greens. Children know what makes them feel good, even young ones and they love to help make their own decisions.
Cynthia, I think so. I don't think children disregard their sixth sense the way we do...they go by Intuition and hopefully we don't knock that out of them.
Missy, That isn't weird to me. My kids loved the Ninja turtles but they didn't go in their rooms....we had happy things in their rooms like Care Bears :)
Teri, That's absolutely Predessessor Energy....which is also why we do clearings inside and out. There is different energies left behind on the land as well as in the homes or businesses.
Trace, Children and animals amaze me, they all have that Sixth sense. We need to learn not to ignore it.
Sally, I heard this recently and believe it: In the near future it won't be a question of whether or not there is a Sixth Sense...the sixth one being Intuition....we all have it to some degree.
Rich, I am very fortunate with my clients. I often learn as much from them as they do with me, it's possibly why we connect on such a deep level.
Carol: You are so right about children and their sensitivity. I have experienced this with my own grandchildren and it really is something to pay attention to.
Carole, it is so important for people to pay attention to their and their children's feelings. This story carries an important lesson: there's usually something more to why we feel a certain way. And, you are right, kids pick up on energies (positive and negative) very quickly.
Children are a great indicator of what is going on in a home. I had a young client who wanted an orange house -- there simply were NO orange houses -- so he settled for a home that had a bedroom he could paint orange! He is so happy and he gives me lots of hugs when I go to visit -- he loves his house and his orange room.
Donna, I hoped that possibly some parents would realize their child might not be "acting up" -- it may be a result of their environment. Children are sensitive and intuitive...and hopefully are listened to.
Marzena, It amazes me what children pick up on....and that sadly, some are still brushed off when they try to talk about it. They shouldn't be, something is affecting them.
Joan, I am a huge believer that children know instinctively what colors they need to feel good :) Some adults do as well....I always when doing color consults ask my clients to include the children even if they are young.
Carole,
Sorry to be getting to this amazing post so late....I was away much of last week and just returned Friday afternoon. I'm still playing catch-up with all of my favourite writer's posts and likely will be for the next little while.
I'm glad you were able to help this family and found what it was that was causing their daughter to feel uneasy.
I remember when I moved into 'Emmeline's house', the house I used to blog about, my oldest son used to tell my Mother that the house 'talked to him'. He even told my Mother the things the house told him and they completely jived with what I also sensed in the house and grew to know about it's history. My middle son was very uneasy sleeping in the house for a long time as he too could sense something there, however my youngest son did not sense things there. Intuitive people seem to have enhanced intuitiveness when they are young, before it becomes muted by a noisy and un-approving world.
