As a Feng Shui Consultant in New York City and Long Island, I am often called to homes, apartments and businesses when someone is moving in or just prior. This is the ideal time to go as I can help them with furniture placement, colors, and one of the most important things of all, erasing Predecessor Energy from a space so they can start off fresh.
Previous occupants can leave behind their own IMPRINT of their energies; some are sad, angry....or there has been a foreclosure. Even when you purchase from those that leave under good circumstances such as "moving up" in the world, you want to infuse your new space with YOUR energy. This is why we consider SPACE CLEARING and BLESSINGS so important.
Some of my calls are from clients who just don't feel comfortable in their own homes. They don't know what or why but they don't sleep well and notice a shift---as Feng Shui Consultants we sometimes realize it's Predecessor Energy.....not only of the home itself, but things that have occurred on the LAND.
And then there are the "other" calls....from very upset people who sometimes see, hear or feel something in their homes. I know there are many who don't believe in Spirits (notice I didn't say GHOSTS) but it makes you wonder....there are so many intelligent, normal people that are experiencing this. Are they just imaginging things? Ive been in many of these homes and can assure you there ARE some "mysterious" happenings. Lights flickering, the doorbell ringing when no one is there, noises of all kinds....It can at times be a bit unnerving.
(They always appear so "normal")
One of my clients who was seeing a counselor for a painful divorce finally mentioned what he was experienceing in his home. Interestingly enough, his counselor advised him to call a Feng Shui Consultant. Children, especially, are more open and sensitive to these energies then adults so when your child speaks, LISTEN. I know of one couple who had been terrorized in a new home. They actually called each other on their cell phones to let each other know they had arrived home so they could meet out front. One evening after MANY evenings of hearing noises (and being too terrified to get out of bed), they awoke to muddy footprints all over their living room. They literally took nothing from the house and had it put back on the market. I would tend to say no one would do that unless there were some pretty disturbing things going on......
Some of the different things people do when they are experiencing "Things that Bump in the Night": Noises, "sightings," any unusual electrical energy and oftentimes, just a feeling....a very uncomfortable feeling. I know many Realtors have felt the energies of homes...angry, sad homes that they can't WAIT to get out of. Sellling them can be a challange.

Carole ~ I could see having you come and do space clearing and blessing for my new home when I move, just to get off to a good, fresh start, as our move will really be a good, fresh start as empty nesters. Looking forward to the next post!
Speaking of blessings...my clients already have the appointment set for Friday (day of recording) to bless the place before moving in. It 'clears' all negativity and such so they can start 'anew' in their new place.
Carol, this is such an interesting post about the prior energy. I have had women mainly explain what they felt from homes from divorce or violence. I can't explain it but you know it well.
Carole, This is a very interesting subject. I'd love to learn more about it.
Carole- you explained this pretty good. I know many people that cleanse with sage, that's the only way I know. The Native American Way.
There is no doubt that every house I walk into has some sort of energy there. And you are right, it is important to clear that "old" energy. Often my clients will make comments like --- "Oh, this is a happy house" or "I don't know what it is, but I have to get out of here"! Very interesting -- and something to pay attention to.
Carole...I have definately "felt" an energy in certain houses. Perhaps the fact that they've never been lived in is why new homes always feel so "cold"!!
Hi Carole...Jim and I started with an architect and a blank piece of paper. Perhaps that is why I feel so comfortable in our home.
We have so many windows and french doors that we receive an abundance of light which fills us with good feelings and certainly did as soon as we moved in.
I believe our essence will always be a part of this home (hopefully with permission from the next owners).
Kathleen
P.S. We moved into our home in August 1994 and it is the longest I have ever lived in one house in my whole life.
Both the homes I've owned I built from the ground up, so I never would have thought about this! I will keep this in mind for my clients.
Carole- I know you remember our story of Gil in our home. What an angel he was. My daughters still speak of their experiences seeing him walk around the house making sure we were ok.
Sally- We cleanse with sage too!
Carole - this is interesting. I have a tendency to "feel" a house when I walk in. My husband thinks I'm nuts, but that's nothing new. LOL
In one of our rentals there is a "visitor" that stops by every now and then. But this "visitor" does not bring an ill wind - in fact the opposite. There is a quiet and friendly feeling that fills the unit for a bit. I think his name is Warren. Don't ask me why I think that, but after about the second "meeting" that's what I call him. Perhaps he told me?? Who knows.
I have done some research to see if there was any notable event that took place there over the years, but no luck. Maybe "Warren" just liked living there at some point.....
Good morning Carole! My goodness, there are some uneasy situations that happen and how scary that is. It amazes me the energy that is felt in each home as I take my clients out shopping for their new home. I will never forget this very large home that was on the market, only 10 years old, but the moment I walked through the entry way, I couldn't get out of there any quicker. It was to date, the worst energy I have ever felt in a home and it was vacant at the time. I prayed my clients wouldn't want that house because that would mean going back and it was truly horrible. What a wonderful idea to bless the home prior to moving in. Well I have missed you dearly my friend and hope that all is going very well with you. I can see I have a whole lot of catching up to do. Big hugs to you!
Thanks Carole for reminding me I am not *crazy* - I do believe one can feel the energy in a home, be it positive or negative.
Carole: I do believe that children are much more in tune with something like this and even animals too, especially dogs. I believe I have actually witnessed this happening in one house in particular that comes back to memory. The owner had a dog who could be in a sound sleep and then suddenly sit up and stare at a doorway for several minutes. Even when you called his name, the dog would not respond but held his stare on the doorway. There was a small child in the house that seemed to either see or sense something in her bedroom. It wasn't a scary thing at all and I had never experienced anything like that before.
Fascinating, Carole! There is no doubt that the minute I enter a house I get a feeling...a sense of warmth or happiness or saddness or coldness. I can almost always sense when the sellers are getting a divorce or are selling because of unhappy circumstances. You have such a great job and are so good at it!
This is very interesting. I guess I learned something new today. The only energy in my home is ours we moved in to a new construction 13 years ago, so Im sure there is a mixture of energies (eclectic) mostly positives...I think !! lol
Carole,
I have quite a bit of experience with this as you already know from our many talks. Objects also hold predecessor energy and I believe this is in large part the draw that antiques have on so many people. They are not just buying an object, they are buying a 'feeling'.
I believe that there are many different kinds of energy that can be felt....some of it is left over emotions that have been absorbed by the objects and the house itself, or perhaps the land. Some of it is actually the energy force of beings who have lived there previously and I believe in this case, they have a message to impart. Especially if a person has been 'called' to that house. Not many people are strong enough to stay with the house and determine what the message is.....
Jo
Kathy, Are you really moving? Your area is so lovely, I hope if you are you are staying local!
Sally, I am somehow not surprised and so glad to hear it.....I would BET you recommended it to them and they will feel and do so much better! What lucky clients to have you.
Gary, I can feel such a heaviness in some homes. Sometimes it's just the heavy furnture weighing it down...but we always want to make sure a new space is cleared for our OWN energy.
Susan, Many people can feel things right away in a home, others can't. Our surroundings have a huge impact on our lives so we do always recommend a home or new business be cleared and blessed.
Kathy, Pure Sage is exactly what we use but I never recommend the realtor do it themselves, the homewoners should. It is so powerful and Native Americans use it to help clear the energies in people.
Joan, There are places that can make you uncomfortable and you don't even know why. We believe it's old energy imprints left behind and clients always tell me what a difference blessings make.
Joan, That's an excellent point and also why we believe vacants are more difficult to sell....there's no energy in there!
Kathleen, You have built from the ground up and that totally infuses your energy into the home...and is a wonderful feeling. Some new homeowners tell me their homes felt wonderful from the second they stepped inside...if you moved and loved it you truly left behind a good energy and feelings.
Pam, It can help homeowners "detach" as well, also very important in Feng Shui. We believe a home won't sell if clients can't detach themselves from it.
Katerina, I absolutely do...children are so sensitive and sometimes I feel that their parents aren't listening to them. And isn't Sage wonderful?
Carol, It's funny when you mention the word spirit some people automatically think of something horrible or scary....yet a huge percentage believe in Angels. That may just be what Warren is.
Julie, I am thrilled to see you back in the rain, you have been very much missed by so many of us! I know the feeling you got in that house, I've had it on occasion...and other times felt absolutely wonderful when i walk in. I don't ever discount what a client tells me, they are the ones that live there and know their homes better then anyone. And welcome back again!!
Debbie, You are not crazy and neither are my clients. There are imprints left behind and they can be felt by many of us.
Donna, You're absolutely right about animals, I should have mentioned that. They are very much in tune just like children, having not learned how to "block" it yet. I have seen all my dogs staring at something I cannot see from time to time and I always believe it is a former pet coming back to visit.
Diane, I do as well...and interestingly enough, I don't always feel what the homeowners do or I can feel it in another area of the home then they mention. Clearing their space makes a huge difference for them.
Fernando, I have no doubt there are wonderful energies in your home....now think about what you can do from a Feng Shui perspective to add to your staging. It helps.
Jo, I know you believe in this and not all my clients are scared, some are just uneasy and some actually love the energy. And it is very true about used or antique furniture, we were taught by one teacher to advise clients not to buy it but some people LOVE it....we were advised by another on how to teach them to clean it. I too believe that sometimes Homes choose their occupants.
Hi Carole,
Houses do indeed have energy, some good..some bad. Having a house cleansed before moving in makes a lot of sense. But what if the land is affected, will it be cleansed along with the house or does it require a seperate cleansing?
Carole- I absolutely wouldn't suggest the Realtor do the "cleansing". I have been to several sharmin to bless certain medicinal things I have put together....My grandkids and I collect sage and wrap it for our own use, or for others.
Cynthias question is a good one, I await your answer.
Muddy footprints? That's terrifying. Were you able to take care of that house?
Cynthia, The land is a separate, outdoor blessing that is sacred for clients and one of the blessings where an energy exchange is needed. Sorry I can't share it with you.
Kathy, There was a realtor I worked with and asked her to have her clients do the blessing....not her. She later told me they had already moved so she decided to do it---without protection and would not do it again!
Chris, They had already fled that house (and literally lost a fortune on it). They called me just when they finally moved to a new house. In the meantime, they both had to go back and live with their parents until they were able to financially afford a new home. I am SO glad I wasn't called to the old one!
Very interesting - what kind of stuff do you do for a 'clearing'...........or re energizing ofa home? I know when I show homes that I can sense the minute I cross a threshold the energy of theplace............and sometimes I watch to see if thats reflected in how my clients respond to a particular home.............the art of selling - fascinating isn't it? I'll have to check and see if there is a feng shui expert in my area.............or how to go about being one!
Hi Liz, We do different types of clearings for the insides of homes and businesses and then for the land, depending in part on what we feel it may need. Interior space clearings are done a number of ways...with sage or sound. It's an involved process but I know that it works because I've seen it so many times. And I advise my agents to have their clients do it....most do!
