Exploring Long Island NY: Fire Island Lighthouse and Kismet Community

During the last un-official weekend of Summer, I treated myself to a tour of the Fire Island Light House. I have to say, this has become one of my new favorite places on Long Island, and it only took me 34 years to discover it, ha! If you decide to embark on this day trip, drive over to Robert Moses State Park in Long Island, NY. And be sure to park in Field 5. That is where the trail-head begins for the Fire Island Lighthouse walk and to hike to the first community of Kismet.

Be sure you don't mind high places and tight spaces.

I believe it took about 182 steps to reach the top. And so worth it because, the view is a amazing! The image you see above is looking East toward Fire Island, NY. Looking West, on a clear day, you can see good ol' New York City.  After witnessing this view, it came to my attention the distance between the Lighthouse and Kismet (the first community on Fire Island) was not so far (at least it seemed that way to me). So, without hesitation, I carefully stepped back down the spiral staircase and began my mini hiking adventure to Kismet.

There, I enjoyed a tasty lunch, played a game of pool and briefly chatted with some locals at the Kimset Inn

If you even get a chance, please do put this "things to do on Long Island" on your list. You'll receive a certificate of completion for climbing all those stairs! Anytime of the year is good.  Ooo yes, and for those who live on Long Island, be sure to stop by your public library or visit the website before you go, as you could obtain a free day pass for the Lighthouse tour.

Good morning Laura - I have been to Robert Moses State Park many times when I lived in Central Islip.  I always remember the lighthouse just never visited it.

Thank you very much for sharing your photographs.

The rainy weather in Maryland has reduced my photowalks.
