Well, I did it....and I had a BLAST! In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, I was due to read a blog post for a Radio Station at Fordham University....Activerain Hits the RADIO! A True Activerain SUCCESS STORY! by Feng Shui Long Island
The show is about Interior Design and they will have several Interior Designers speaking about all different aspects of it. And included in there will be my Feng Shui Post (modified and edited per their request). I also have to wonder, was THIS what was coming?? It very well could have been!
Historic Fordham University, Keating Hall, Home of WFUV Radio for New York City.
I got to go to prestigious Fordham University, a historical college campus located in the Bronx, New York. The radio station also has other offices in New York City. It's a public radio station and their motto is "You'll NEVER be Bored" -- lets hope they still say that after my post
It was a delight to be there but anticipating traffic (we had been warned on the TV it would be heavy due to the Chinese New Year) we managed to breeze on in. If it hadn't been so cold out that day I would have wandered the beautiful (and HUGE) campus! We were VERY early and went inside to find the station, trying to appear quite calm.
Rasheeda, the lovely Producer of the show who had contacted me, had allowed one HOUR of time to read the post. As I came in early and asked the woman in front if Rasheeda was available, she looked on her schedule and told me that they had the studio booked at 12:30 pm---it was just a few minutes after 12 and there certainly wasn't enough time to read the post.
There were no pictures allowed (see how well I listen?) but my son managed to snap this when she left the desk for a second. Rasheeda DID come out and told us to come into the Studio; we would be a bit rushed, she said, but we could get it done. Ok, I'll admit it, I am not used to reading at a radio station. I didn't know the microphones are HUGE and you can't move an inch. My post was on two pages and twice she had to stop me because the pages make a sound.

Those microphones don't miss a THING. You can't move your head and have to stay exactly in front of it. Wow, who thought it was so INVOLVED? I read it through several times and then separate paragraphs...and finally separate lines. They are going to edit it, she told me and at the end she allowed my very quiet son to snap a quick shot---trying not to look nervous.
She was kind enough to walk us to the front and I realized the station which goes to all of New York City and parts of Long Island has up and coming artists. I asked her if any big names come in. "Oh yes, we have Cheryl Crow next week." And realizing it's primarily a folk station I asked her if she'd ever had my favorite singer, Jim Dawson. A phenomenal folk singer I have been listening to since I was 17 years old; he reminds me a bit of James Taylor but for some unknown reason, Jim never hit it BIG. I do hope she contacts him.
We took a drive by Arthur Avenue to taste some of that famous pizza but drove around and around and couldn't find a place to park so we headed home. When we got back home, I decided to look more into this radio station and saw something ELSE I didn't know......That evening's guest? Ringo Starr. I would have waited all day : )
WFUV Public Radio | News/Sports | Cityscape
The show will air this Saturday at 7:30 AM (Cityscapes) and will go into archive later for anyone who lives in New York City. It is 90.7 FM Radio, WFUV.

Hi Carole,
I'm totally with Kathy on this one! You are rubbing shoulders with icons, that's just awesome! Can I be your friend?! LOL
I hope you had fun.
What an exciting day to begin the Chinese New Year! You definitely had an adventure at the studio...who knew that recording a broadcast was so exacting. Will they give you a cd of your recording? I wonder if you could use it in your blog somehow? Thanks for letting us know how it went!
Carole... this is great news. I will have to check out your link tomorrow.... me need sleep... ;o) Again, congrats...
Carole,
It looks like you had a fabulous time! I love the photos....something to keep in your testimonial portfolio.
I'm so glad everything went well and wish you could have stayed to meet Ringo Starr. I've never heard of Jim Dawson, however I'll now have to find something by him and give it a listen....I'm sure if you like him, I will too.
Looking forward to hearing the broadcast...

WOW Carole! You did it! That's fantastic!!!!!
I have a friend here who started in radio about 6 months ago. She had been asked to be a guest host on a couple of occasions, but then got offered the full time position. She had never been in a radio station in her life other than as a guest. She took to it like a duck to water. She was extremely nervous at first, too.
I'm sure you did fine. And I have to tell you ............ it's exciting knowing a budding New York radio personality! :)))))
I knew you would do it and do it well! It must have been a little scary but so very exciting. You are becoming quite a celebrity yourself. :0)
I have been waiting for you to post about this Carole - you looked alittle nervous :) - boy I can't belive the microphones are that sensitive to pick up the sound of papers! Glad your son was with you for moral support
If the radio show gets archived it should have a website address for accessing so that all of us could listen to it ( not just New Yorkers :)
let us know please
Great Job Carole!
Sincerely,
Grace
Congratulations Carole! I would have waited all day for Ringo too! In my 'previous life' I did some radio and TV commercials and found the personel very helpful, so I felt quite relaxed with it, but always had a difficult time projecting my voice properly the way they wanted me to.
You had a terrific NY day!!!
Kathy, Can you BELIEVE I didn't know and missed him? I can't think of how much fun that would have been! But it was so much fun, if it EVER happens again I won't be so nervous (I think you could hear my knees knocking :)
Marzena, I should be so lucky...but it was fun and for me, stepping out of my "box." Maybe a fabulous new client will hear me :)
Deborah, It was a great beginning! I didn't want to see last year end :) She will send me a CD and I sure hope I sound ok on it...
Kevin & Monica, I am hoping it came out well...and I've never heard of blogtalkamerica...It sounds very interesting, thank you for the info.
Wow, Lisa, I didn't think it reached anywhere out of NYC, even in the archives. That's good to know and thank you so much for checking it for me!
Jeff, I hope you got some much needed sleep...Believe me, I know the feeling. Thanks for stopping by, especially when you were exhausted.
Kathy, Thank goodness it wasn't live--as short as it was it needed editing :) It will be fun to hear it. Fordham looked incredible but it was freezing--next time :)
Jo, It was so much fun--an adventure :) I have been listening to Jim Dawson since I was 17, you would love his music. I have all the original albums and still play them.
Carol,I'm sorry I was so nervous during it---but there's a first for everything! Maybe some day they'll do a whole show about Feng Shui!
Cynthia, I had a blast. If I ever go back they had a Botanical Gardens across the street....I would have loved that too :)
Teri, It still amazes me every day what people are finding from Activerain...and it was an OLD post that she enjoyed. I knew the NY Times read us but Radio Stations?
Laurie, Thanks for the huge star, I can see it! I don't think you'll get the station out there at all (you may be lucky if you don't), I'm not sure how this turned out! But I know when I drive out East I lose many stations I normally listen to.
Grace, I was trying to be SO careful with the papers and it happened twice anyway. Since the microphone was directly in front of me I had to hold the paper up and off to the side to see it--interesting pose!
Donna, It can come up after it's aired. I'm only on there for a minute or so....imagine all those tapings for a fleeting minute of air time??
Rosario, He always comes through for me...this isn't by far the first time I've needed him for a Feng Shui Event---and I'm sure it won't be the last :) It was nice spending time together.
Fernando, Tense was certainly the word....I was lucky she allowed us to snap one quick shot, we were delaying the person who was booked for the studio!
Jem, I'll be up Saturday morning....with MY fingers crossed! Even if it's only a minute I want a GOOD minute :)
Deborah, Thank you for the lovely Valentine. I didn't know you had done it, I would have called for some helpful tips and advice! It was a totally new experience for me.
Carole,
What wondeful experience!! Lovely dear- You did it- You're the BEst!!! ANd by the way.. did you wait or not for Ringo???
Lisa, My Goodness, dear friend, you are as happy as I was! It played today and they did mention Activerain...but forgot my business. I hope people can find me if they're looking :)
Maria, It was absolutely a wonderful experience, it was a kick for me. I didn't know about Ringo or I would never have left!
Gary, I wasn't meant to be famous--I'm not good at famous I don't think (well, maybe for one day just to see what it feels like :). Leave my AR friends? Never!
Candy, I mean it, you match your name :) If I win the HGTV dream house you're all invited!
Carole, It is fantastic and I am so happy for you. If anyone deserve the success it is you. You are becoming quite a celebrity here on AR too.
Julie, It was fun, I wish I hadn't been so nervous! It wasn't the 15 minutes of fame, just 15 seconds but it really was great!
Arina, It was certainly a wonderful way to start off the New Year! I've set my sights high this year because I had such a wonderful 2007--it will be difficult to beat :)
Joan, It will go into achives but I don't believe it's there yet. I have to find the link and repost it...you'll hear all about Interior Design and my blog post in the middle :)
Hi Carole,
What a beautiful building. Ringo Starr wow I bet you wished you did your research before!! Sounds like you had a fun time I am so happy for you! You deserve it!
