Mirrors are a huge principle in Feng Shui and also in Home Staging. So much so that I'm going to give you the "lowdown" from a Feng Shui Consultants use of Mirrors....and the effects of them.
Mirrors are used quite often in Feng Shui with INTENT. They can be a way to intentionally draw someone into a space---or make them feel "pushed away." For example, we usually recommend placing a mirror if you have a small entranceway, to "grace" someone into the space. We also look for walls to hang mirrors where they reflect the outside. "Letting the Outside IN" is a Feng Shui Principle to create the Yin/Yang of a space. But every space is different and before hanging ANY mirrors, have someone hold them and see how they make you FEEL first.
Mirrors also Intensify and Magnify anything they are reflecting. If you hang a mirror and it's reflecting a blank wall, you will double the energy of nothing. Always check to see the ENERGY of what that mirror faces. Some lovely artwork opposite a mirror is a wonderful addition.....some people want to intensify LIGHT as well.
*Here's a little footnote before I forget: With the exception of small mirrors used to institute a "cure" in Feng Shui, always make sure that a mirror is larger then your head and not broken up into pieces. We need to see ourselves WHOLE and if the mirror is smaller then your head you are cutting off your AURA which is your energy field.
We don't advise mirrors in the bedrooms, something people have a difficult time with. If you need a mirror in your bedroom to check your clothes, try placing it INSIDE the closet door. This is probably where I've seen the most difficulties with mirrors and SO many people aren't sleeping well. If a mirror is opposite you and you wake up to face yourself every morning, it can be an energy draw. Let's face it; we're not looking our best when we wake up! Something to defect the mirror might be a large, colorful vase placed in front. Pretty statues (2-we think in PAIRS in the bedroom) or use your own imagination. Remember, if you are missing an Element you can intensify it here.
A true case in point on the power of Mirrors. While at a client's home I found the couple was not sleeping well at ALL. Both were up many times during the night and their bed faced a wall that had an overhang. It did not have any artwork or lights directed UP but standing at the foot of the bed, I could FEEL like I was being pushed out. FEEL it but not SEE it. I hate when this happens but I was stuck in that room, unable to give them an answer on what to do. Minutes went by and they're looking at me expectantly----"COME ON already" I could hear them thinking. I went through question after question and finally it dawned on the homeowner---she had taken down a large mirror and not knowing where to put it, had stored it behind the headboard, making them feel "pushed" into the wall! Ah, nice to know I wasn't crazy after all :)
Another issue with bedroom mirrors: I have often seen closeted mirrors. The scenario here is having a closet with mirrors, the bed in the middle and windows at the other side of the room. The occupants can feel as if they're being "pushed" outside. An easy solution if you don't want to take them down is hanging a sheer fabric over them. You can add color and warmth and close them during the evening. Remember too that your TV has not only electromagnetic energy but a reflective quality. Don't sleep with the TV on and if it's facing you, it's best to cover it at night.
This is a BIG Feng Shui concern: Mirrors should never reflect a drain. We think of drains as simply that, drain energy which can drain our finances, health and business.
We use mirrors as "cures" too. Fighting with a neighbor? We use a small 2" round mirror to gently deflect their energy back into their space. We often place a small (3 to 5 inch) Bagua mirror over our front door facing out to deflect street energy, fast moving cars or T Junctions. **A hint for buying mirrors: Anytime you're purchasing something for Feng Shui and you look under those sites, the price goes up. Small round mirrors can be found in craft stores for a dollar or two. If you look for "Octagon" mirror instead of "Bagua" mirror they are often used to display jewelry and can be purchased very inexpensively. I personally prefer the kind with NO WOOD around them but that is a matter of personal preference.
One more quick tip to be mindful of: Convex and Concave mirrors are used only when necessary for certain very powerful remedies. I personally have only used them a few times in over ten years so chances are you won't need it.
This was about as short as I could make this post and is only an overview of a complex subject in Feng Shui! There is SO much more to mirrors and their own particular energy that they carry but keeping these points in mind when staging a home, selling a home or for your own personal use can make a very big difference. Thanks for the information on mirrors, I was going to hang a grouping of 9 mirrors which are not big enough to show your whole face on a wall as you leave the room.
I use mirrors a lot Carole, in many ways, some of which you may not approve ;) in my bedroom ..but they work for me - none facing the bed.
Mirrors are a wonderful 'neutral' alternative to wall hanging when art is an issue. I love to be lavish with mirrors - they seem to hold such excitement for me! I've tried to figure what that is but beyond the reflective and light catching qualities especially in dingy areas ......I don't know - I just love them!
Carole- Reading your posts reminds me of how deep and wide Feng Shui affects us and our environments, the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know. Now I understand a little better why I find placing mirrors to take just a little longer - I'd been doing it by 'feel' and what I saw behind me.

Hi Carole ! This is such a fascinating subject....I remember when I moved here, I felt that the blank wall that my bathroom vanity mirror was facing was very disturbing somehow. I immediately went and shopped for a pretty and gentle watercolour of tiny ladyslippers in a pretty frame and hung it directly facing the mirror. It seemed to solve the problem and the bad feeling I was having went away. Now I know why !
I'm not a big mirror fan....when I see mirrors as a focal point in a room, I feel unsettled and uncomfortable like the mirror is affecting the room negatively somehow. I would never have one in my bedroom.
Thank goodness you solved the couple's problem who had hung a mirror above their bed...I can't even imagine....

Lisa, You need to restore at night for another long day :) Mirrors have an effect everywhere but they do definitely disturb sleep. You can cover them with a sheer fabric at night.
Ginger, I don't think many people were aware of it, either. I find so many clients who aren't sleeping well and once we adjust or remove the mirrors they tell me that they are finally getting restful sleep.
Candy, Hmmm is right. You are cutting out your Aura which is part of your energy field. Any chance of getting a larger one?
Trace, Nine is a wonderful number. If they will not be reflecting you as you pass and are reflecting the outside I think they would look lovely. We want a person to see themselves as "whole."
Deborah, If you're happy with them and you're sleeping, I 'm sure you are doing something right. As long as they make you feel good go with YOUR instincts.
Diane, We have many mirrored closet doors as well. Some of my clients just put a simple sheer on top and then drape it to the side during the day; at night it adds color and actually looks lovely.

Jo, I felt kind of stupid. I was just standing there, feeling it and not knowing what it was. Finally she realized it was on the floor with the mirror facing out....pushing the couple out of bed and into the wall. We had a good laugh over it and it's funny that she never forgot it!
Terry, Hi, it could be so many things it's difficult to tell. Make sure under your bed is cleared out---energy needs to flow around you. It could be an imbalance in the elements, or a lack of balance in the room or just the way your bed is placed. Look at it objectively and see what you feel....it's likely you'll pick it up.

Carole ~ What an interesting post, and very timely.....on Friday I'm staging a house where the master bedroom has a built-in vanity that's part of the bedroom area -- it leads into the shower area and there is nothing to separate it from the sleeping area. There is a large mirror over the sink that faces the wall where I would be placing the bed. Is this OK for staging, since it's not an occupied home? I have only two mirrors in my house and I'm now wondering if I should add more? One is in the bathroom over the sink. I can't move either - suggestions... The other mirror is part of an antique bedroom set with the mirror attached to the dresser.
Your post is so interesting...thank you! I love mirrors. My best friend says it is because I am skinny and like to look at myself. But this is not true! (she is overweight and has NO mirrors in her house) The real reason is a love light. LOVE the outdoors being reflected in.
The most intersting 2 points are don't have a series of small mirrors and none in the bedroom. Over the years I have always toyed with putting up a grouping of mirrors, but it never felt right. I also have a mirror in my bedroom (not facing the bed), but have always wanted something different there....even though mirror faces the outdoor patio. Now I know why.
PS Both times we have moved the mortgage company into new offices, our owners have spent thousands of dollars to consult with a feng shui consultant. Each corner has a crystal ball hanging from the ceiling...why?
Carole ~ Great post! I love to use mirrors in my own home, especially to reflect light - make it a little brighter in a particular rooms, open up the space. But I have been in some homes where the mirror is placed where it is not reflecting anything you would want to reflect, almost as if it was hung there just to take up space. I have also been in homes where I have felt uncomfortable in the room where a particular mirror is hung (a dining room where half the table sees themselves eating).
I didn't even think about TV tube reflections - great point.

Betty, I'm certainly trying! From a Feng Shui perspective it "cuts" your body and you don't see yourself as "whole." Which makes sense, actually. We are supposed to see ourselves as complete.
Hi Janice, I am particularly careful with children and wouldn't have those mirrors in their bedrooms! I know people like them but in most cases they are not good for sleeping.
Joan, If they reflect the outside leave them up! That is bringing the outdoors in and creating light and energy! They may be perfectly placed Ms. Maven :)
Maureen, That's an interesting room you have there with angled ceilings and an indent area by the window...but to your question, yes, it can reflect the bed and I'd put some pretty artwork above it. That's the energy you will be doubling. For staging it's fine. I would love to see the "after" shots!

Missy, Thanks for your question. No, it isn't "good" Feng Shui. A mirror placed in an entryway should draw you in---in one piece. This sounds as if it would cut up someone's image and we need to see ourselves as whole.
Maria, I loved our consultation and yes, you sure do have a lot of mirrors! You also happen to have chosen a home that we both know had Feng Shui Principles used. Maybe you could upload one of the pictures you sent me that showed what they did with the stairs? That was absolutely unique and I'd love you to show it! Dena, I find this often in bathrooms where you step in, close the door and the mirror over the sink reflects a blank wall. If this is the case, put some pretty artwork there. I don't know if the bedroom mirrors are directly facing you but it's important to note how you are sleeping? If you're sleeping well, leave them. Otherwise you can think of something pretty in "twos" to put in front of them to deflect the energy from you.
Janet, You are enhancing a Feng Shui principle of letting the outside IN. That's ENERGY you're bringing into your space that is making you feel so well! I don't know what school of Feng Shui the consultant used but it sounds as though they were honoring the directions. We typically use crystals for different reasons such as to diffuse energy near a staircase, sometimes in a bedroom depending on the placement, in long hallways....It's a whole separate topic, believe it or not :)

Hi Kathy, I am careful when I discuss Mirrors with my clients and I go over topics (including this) so when I see it in their home they already understand it. It's true that people don't think about their tv's---they have both electro-magnetic energy AND a reflective quality--both not good for sleeping.

Susan, You can drape sheers or put a tall vase with some lovely flowers (real or silk) in it. It would stop the mirror from impacting you directly. See if it makes a difference on how you sleep.

Sally, I like that man! It is intentionally used to "push" others energy away to make our space our own. We don't typically use hanging ones, we use one over the front door but the INTENT is the same so I'd put it exactly where he told you.

Maureen, That home is lovely but has a few Feng Shui issues if you're living in it. Nothing that couldn't be addressed. For showing it to prospective buyers you can work with that mirror very well, however. The artwork here is key to that room and I was wondering about the size of the headboard as well. I think colors in that space would be beautiful. I was also wondering what you planned to use in the one corner by the window? A small desk, chair or table or some pretty greenery? I can't wait to see how this comes out and I loved that you shared it with us!
Donna, The Form school of Feng Shui suggests water in the front of your home (oftentimes why we suggest an outdoor water feature or a fountain at the front door) and a mountain at your back, to back you up in life. You've got both areas well covered and it's probably why you enjoy your home so much! Isn't it funny how we instinctively use Feng Shui principles and don't even realize it? I love when I see some clients that have done something like that and didn't know why except that it "felt good." :)

Elizabeth, I love that mirror, I'd be curious before removing it to see what it reflects? If it's the bed it's probably not a good idea but if it's the outside, it would still work beautifully. Most importantly are how you feel with it and how you are sleeping so if you don't have any sleep issues and you like it, leave it.

Mirrors, well, we have been meaning to take down our totally walled on 2 walls mirrors. My consultant told me to just hang some curtains over them for now. I know they are not good for marriage either as they symbolize a double marriage in Feng Shui when they are over your bed. We are working on it, we are in the middle of remodeling the house but we have to do all the bathrooms first. Katerina

I often see a tombstone mirror that greats you when you walk in a foreclosed property or reflecting a sink drain in a bathroom. Says to me Death too all who enter, death to your money. I have even seen a few small ones left behind by the past owners that could have easily been taken with then but are not. Kind of marking the death of their ownership.

Terrylynn, I do phone consultations all the time but need a LOT of information...but they do work, my clients are very happy. If you can't see who's entering the door in Feng Shui you have an "unprotected back." You should hang a mirror so that you can see who is entering. Just make sure it's at a correct angle so you can see. I'd love to meet you in person one day as well!
