Luna Moth (caterpillar) teaches us a lesson in Feng Shui
Meet our friend Herbert the Luna Moth Caterpillar! We discovered him on our visit to Trail View Long Island NY State Park located in Woodbury NY today.
Photo by NY Feng Shui consultant Laura Cerrano of a Luna Moth Caterpillar on Long Island New York
Interesting Facts about the Luna Moths
- They are the largest moth species in North America
- The Luna Moth wing spand is between 3-4 inches
- When fully transformed they have no mouth
- The Luna Moth's only live for about a week
Herbert the interesting looking Caterpillar who will turn into a big beautiful colorul Moth
This little or rather big critter had some interesting reactions when we first came across him. Many cringed at the sight of him while others (including myself) looked at Herbert with amazement and seeing the bigger picture …that when fully transformed he will become a gorges Moth. When you hear the word "moth" you usally think of those tiny Earth tone colored fellas. I asure you this is not one of them. Feng Shui lessons for today, be open to seeing the bigger picture, opportunities and never restricted yourself to only one point of view...stay open minded.

When I saw the title of your post I hoped you had photos! These big guys are so interesting......and ravenous eaters!
Great picture of the caterpillar. Keep it out of your closet :-)
Great pictures and post, thanks for sharing it with us
I had never heard of a luna moth. Boy they are big.. Almost as big as some small birds. Your photos are wonderful. Tank for introducing me to the luna moth.
How sad. Herbert will only live one week :(
I love the lesson within, Laura and it is SO true! I always do my best to see the big picture - it always helps me continue on!
Laura Herbie looks great but I prefer him as the colorful moth:) We can learn so much from nature, everything has a purpose even if we can't see it.
Hey stranger... long time... and yes, the bigger picture. I loved how you worked this into your post regarding Feng Shui... great job. ps.. who named the moth Herbert and why Herbert... lol
Thanks Laura for Herberts lesson. ok, I'll admit it, I needed to be told that today, so will for at least today, as a start, I will be open minded.
I love your first shot, great vibrant color and eye catching subjest. You inspire us, as you link the positive in everthing you see and do.
Ann, they are amazing I could not believe my eyes how huge and what great colors too :)
Bill I know it would chew up your whole wardrobe!
Caron, Your welcome..this was one critter I did not want to pass on, plus it is very rare to see :)
Joan, I can not wait to show you all the follow up photos, once the wings are expanded and all the colors are fresh and lush, that is going to be very exciting :)
Jane, yes it is said, but the cycle and purpose for Mr. Herbert. He lives long enough to mate and that is it. That is why evolution said, heck with the mouth.
Leesa, If we take the time to see everyday can teach us a lesson. It can be fun or serious but no matter what..it helps us grow and appreciate life.
Jennifer, The colors of him right now will translate to his wings...cant wait :)
Jeff, LOL! I know thanks for stopping on by. During the summer I am also a Woodworking Teacher at a local camp on Long Island NY. My students and I took a trip to a local NY State park and observe the colors of nature and came across Mr. Herbert. The children daubed him, Mr. Herbert...I feel like we should put glasses on him or something :)
Hey Al and Peggy, your very welcome and I am glad you read this post a gave you a kind reminder to do just that :)
Ellen, that is what one of my goals are, to educated and create different perspective on how to perceive life so that you all can do the very same :)
Laura, absolutely agree! Many times people assume, and they don't try to look further and miss out lots of good things in life.
Interesting article. We do not have Luna Moths here. Neat to see one of the larva...
Rita, sometimes we need a cute friendly reminder, Thanks Herbert!
Michael, Yep mainly in North America these guys are in abundance but still rare to come across. We cant wait to see him in full Bloom :)
