Watch Out! Wild Turkeys on Long Island New York...Cold Spring Harbor New York

Wild Turkeys in Cold Spring Harbor New York

Fresh turkey anyone?  After a Feng Shui consultation in Cold Spring Harbor Long Island NY Laura Cerrano of Feng Shui Manhattan New York and I came across a group of Wild Turkeys.  I have to say, they were very cute.  I'm also not at ALL sure I want to eat them at Thanksgiving anymoreAnimals in Feng Shui are pure FIRE Energy!

I would like to share a short History about our friendly Long Island Turkeys; well if you consider pecking your car friendly. During the 19th Century on Long Island, turkeys were hunted to near extinction. In 1992 a gentlemen by the name of Mark Lowery helped reintroduce turkeys back to Eastern Long Island NY. Today our fine feathered friends are thriving. If your looking for some really good tasting turkey, Laura and I suggest trying Zorn's in Bethpage Long Island NY..this is a Long Island Landmark that has been around since 1940.

Carole, I am not sure if I will call them cute, I am a "bigbirdphobia" especially a few of them together like this. >< , But good for you to run into them at the right time for this pic. and I do eat turkey though, :).

Hi Carole: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think those are wild turkeys. They look more like Guinea Fowl. Very large ones, to be sure. And yes they are edible, if you are so inclined:o)

To all Thank You for your corrections our error.  While seeing these interesting animals we asked a patron on the street what they were....next time we'll do better research on our part, sorry about the confusion.  They are Guinea Fowls of Cold Spring Harbor, NY

Dan, they have "Guinea fowl crossing" signs ;)

Robert,Thank you, Laura tried to carefully get as close as she could to capture this photo.  Dedicated to her art, she was on her knees when taking this photo haha :)

JaneAnne,Turns out these are the Guinea Fowls of Long Island NY.  I would love to see a baby Guinea fowl, they are probably really fluffy.

Kathy,At fist I thought when coming across the Guinea Fowls, but it makes it that much more interesting...apparently they have Buffalo on Long Island! Laura and I are very excited to visit the farm.

Jo, Yes these are not turkeys they are Guinea Fowls...I still think they are cute :)

Michelle, Thank you for the information so I could correct it.  I saw some images in Google of the cooked Guinea Fowl..it did look good :)

Carole--I was about to say that these 'turkeys' look different than the ones in my back yard.  Then I read your corrections.  I have never seen Guinea Fowl so you have added to my knowledge.  Thanks--what we don't learn here in the Rain.

OK, first off, I've been to Cold Spring Harbor hundreds of times and I never saw any wild turkeys roaming the streets! How did you manage to see these guys?!!!

And, lastly, you are so right about Zorns! They are without question the best place for turkey or chicken!

My nickname in college was "Turkey," but that's a story for another day. Thought you might also like to know that I have approval for another Nature & Marketing contest; announcement coming later today.

Carole - Guinea Fowl and Wild Turkeys are both members of the same family .... "The guineafowl (sometimes called guineahen) are a family of birds in the Galliformes order" from Wikipedia .... as are wild turkeys

Wow, surprising photo!

Hearing about "Cold Spring Harbor" makes me totally think of one of Billy Joel's first albums, titled the same. It has remained one of my all time favs!

Carole great shot.  Yesterday there was a whole flock in my front yard and I wanted to get a shot but they took off.

Mary, Yep a quick correction to set the record straight :)

Craig, Laura and I got out of the car to get a pick me up cup of coffie and wala! There were the little Guinea Fowls running around eating and pecking cars :)

Sheldon,LOL Jim might have to turn around unless he likes eating Guinea Fowls...could be a new product of sale.

Russel, Interesting, I would like to hear about that when you have time :)  I'll be sure to keep an eye out for other interesting creatures

Kathy, Thank you for the other information, good to know :) I am learning more about these animals each time.

Deena, Billy Joel is so great.  I wish I could have attended his ( think it was his last concert) at Shea stadium.

Bob and Carolin,Thank you, Laura is credited with this photo, she got to there level and pretty close I might say.

Jennifer, Thank you, Maybe next time, they can be quick when needed.

Great Picture!  Living on a farm in PA I often get to see a scene like this.  Must take a picture and send to the group

If they make a really strange sound, they're guinea fowl.  I'm surprised they're just walking around like that.
