"Should I Buy this House?" New Hyde Park, Long Island-- Questions a Feng Shui Consultant gets ALL the Time...And some difficult decisions

I receive many emails from people asking questions and am happy to answer them.  Last night I received an email from someone I do not know, inquiring about the purchase of a home in New Hyde Park, Long Island, New York.  He has been reading about Feng Shui and believes very much in Vastu, the Indian equivalent to Feng Shui and was worried about the home, although he had submitted an offer on it.

The property of the home is not "squared" off, rather it is in a triangle shape.  Meaning, to many consultants, that it would "cut out" both his relationship area AND his wealth area.  Is this good Feng Shui?  Actually, it's not....and in thinking it over I couldn't think of ONE consultant that I know that would have advised him to purchase this home.

And then he called me and emailed me some pictures.  I was agonizing what to tell him because he clearly loved this home.  My daughter who has studied with me on and off for the last five years heard me speaking to him and knew I wasn't sure what to tell him.  And asked me what I would do if I loved a home with "BAD" Feng Shui.  And a really difficult decision became quite easy.....I'd buy it and CHANGE it.  Unlike some consultants, I don't believe that things cannot be changed simply and inexpensively.  And she gave me my answer.

When I was speaking to the client I told him exactly that.  That if it were me, I would buy it and change it with enhancements.  Over the years I have seen clients purchase a home or business that has an absolutely negative Feng Shui aspect and change it with their own Energy and Intentions; and found that THEIR energy is stronger to overcome a situation that others would have deterred them from.

I heard an audible sigh of relief with this man when I told him.  He said he had seen many other homes but felt that "This was IT."  And I believe him.  I made the offhand remark to him that I truly believe you don't always choose a home, sometimes a HOME chooses YOU---and he laughed and said I was absolutely right. A home can draw us in for one reason or another and there is something we simply "connect" with.  And it's meant to be ours.  I wish this man all the wonders and happiness in his new home!

15 years ago we had a company building a high rise for a Chinese developer.  They wer up 5 stories on a 30 story building when the Feng Shui person came out and said the building had to be rotated 45 degrees.  Yup they knocked it down and started over!

Carole, I believe you and I travel along similar planes of energy. Two subjects in this post of yours have been strong on my mind in the past week. In fact one, the fact of a home choosing it's new inhabitants, is something I truly believe in and wrote a long blog post about. I didn't post it because I thought people might wonder if I am losing my mind. <grin>.  Perhaps I will post it later tonight. I will think about it.

The other thing is that I recently listed a piece of land that is in a triangle shape. I call it the 'McCharle's Triangle ' due to an old logging road that traverses it's southern tip.  All I can say is that this piece of land is  THE MOST ENCHANTED piece of property out of the 5 I recently listed and out of all pieces of land I have ever listed in my ENTIRE career.  The energy on this piece of land is phenomenal ! I am wondering if a Ley Line runs across it. Here is one of the pictures I took while sitting on the side of a hill on the property a few days ago :

I sat there on that hillside and did not want to ever leave. I felt so elated that there were a few tears actually escape the corners of my eyes.  I should mention that the piece of land is not a perfect triangle but has one of it's point squared off.

I agree with you. If I love something and it feels 'right' to me, I will go with it.

Bruce, I am not at all surprised they started over.  Many of the methods of Feng Shui are very strict and rigid and clients are told they cannot buy a home or live in one they already own without major renovations.  It's not practical and it actually scares people which is so harmful.

Jo, I will know you're not losing your mind, I do believe that things choose us.  My dog, for example, I swear he picked his home out!  And I've heard it too often from clients that they were absolutely drawn to a home.  Please put your posts up, I would love to read them.  And that picture is absolutely beautiful!

Laurie, I have been speaking to Realtors for years and don't believe I have been in one office where someone hasn't heard of a story of a Feng Shui Consultant ruining a sale for them....They don't realize that not everyone practices it from such a negative point of view and there are many things we can do with a home or office to ensure good energy.

Joan, thank you.  It was a difficult decision but I would have bought it---my daughter couldn't have asked me a better question.  Thank you for the comments!

Carole- while I've never heard of Feng Shui causing a problem for a real estate agent, I can (now that you mention it) see how less experienced stagers might not loosen up enough to see the property through the eyes of the consumer, and offer advice to "avoid" rather than "fix".  That you provide the "fix" is going to separate you from the crowd- and make you the darling of the real estate community!

Laurie, what a nice comment, thank you!  I was surprised at hearing over and over from Realtors that a consultant has ruined a sale for them.  There was also an article in Newsday last year which was harmful to the seller and the online version of it has been changed.  But a consultant was called in and said areas of the home were "problematic."  One area of Wealth was in the Bathroom...and the other area of Wealth had a fireplace.  So "Picture your money burning and going up and out the chute."  If I didn't know anything about Feng Shui I'd be afraid to buy that  home and it did the sellers a disservice.  Be careful who you work with!  I also don't do full staging, I have been redesigning for 11 years and love to work with what clients have---for vacants I send them to the Queen of Vacants on LI, Val.

I hope you will be able to make the AR meeting, I would love to meet you. And if not there perhaps at that sale.....not that I can fit much!  Thanks again for the lovely comment.

Thank you for your post. My husband and I purchased a property with the same shape as the one you mentioned a few years ago in a foreclosure sale. Needless to say, the home has not had very positive energy since we bought it but I never thought about the shape before.

Monica, I honestly believe that a person's own energy can overcome even what is considered Feng Shui of a space that isn't ideal.  If you still have the home and are not doing well, you might want to use some sage inside in each room....It won't address the outside but often times foreclosures are not left under the best of circumstances, what we consider predecessor energy.

Right answer Carol. If someone asked me I would probably answer the same. Of course I would strongly Recommend the person To Have A Home Inspection First (professional habit) just to make sure he will have enough hot water when he will need to take a shower or wash the laundry and the heating system is working all right (besides everything else) since winter is just around the corner. Right? What do you think?

Carole ~ What a great reponse you gave this man.  Your daughter was very smart to ask you the question too.  Hopefully, he will be very happy in his new home.

Tommy, Of couse a home inspection should be done but I trust that his Realtor addressed that issue with him.  I'd certainly hope so, anyway!  Thanks for stopping and and commenting.

Kathy, I heard from him just recently.  He got the house, moved in and I'm going there shortly for a consultation but he's very happy!  Thank you.
