Coney Island Brooklyn New York.
If you've never been there, you might want to see what it looks like. If you've visited, you might want to re-visit one last time. Much of Coney Island in Brooklyn New York has been rezoned and in 2010 many of the familiar places will be gone. To those of us that have visited there since we were young, they are historic. Many historic sites in New York are gone-in the name of "Progress."
As of this writing, it is a stalled project and people are fighting to retain Astroland, just as it is. I did hear the famous Cyclone Roller Coaster will survive. Many other rides and attractions won't.

It will surely change the face of this part of Brooklyn New York. And Coney Island in Brooklyn NY as we know it, will be missed. Here are some photos from 2009, as it is today:

Coney Island is legendary; I think I will make a point of visiting it soon.
Carole - I really enjoy seeing these pictures of Coney Island. As it turns out, my ansestors (Stillwell) settled in the area in the 1600s. . .In fact, I think there is a Stillwell Avenue that is supposed to take you to Coney Island (or near by). I really need to go visit there one day.
Carole ~ I haven't been there for many years.. but New York is NOT the same without Coney Island. I am so glad you have captured these photos... There will be generations who will have nothing else to remember about Coney Island...
Thanks for the memories I grew up in Coney Island and have been there hundreds of times if not more. I loved the rides and the beaches but have not been there in over 35 years.

I've never been but it makes me sad to think of it being gone. So many memories for so many people.
Tom, You may miss many of the attractions...they will likely be gone by 2010 :(

Joan, Whenever they move 'ahead' with progess, we lose the History. Makes me very sad.
I Net: I'm glad we were able to get there. I wanted to show this to those that can't see it in person....before it is gone.
Jennifer, I know, it's very sad to me too. We went there quite often and it definitely has it's own character.
Susan, That's one of the reasons to show the photos...at least you saw it in a way.

carole- How sad to lose something as precious and historic as Coney Island. Hopefully the powers to be can put a stop to it and allow it to survive

Carole - that is unfortunate, I've never been to New York but Coney Island seems to be an important place and looks like a great place to spend some quality family time. Thanks for posting the great photos.
Debbie, I know, they've torn down some wonderful places. We took a last ride there to be able to remember it and show it for those that haven't seen it. What a shame.
Martha, The land has already been rezoned...the re-building is just stalled. Let's hope it stays stalled :)

Oh Carole, that is tragic. Aren't there historical preservation groups all over this?
Carole, I have always wanted to visit Coney Island. It looks like such a fun place. I hate to hear that it will be renovated in the name of progress. It will interesting to see what they will do with the renovation.
Carole, I heard a piece on PBS radio about the Cyclone wooden roller coaster in Houston at AstroWorld being modeled after the Coney Island one. Coney Island is such a part of America, you hate to see it dismantle over time. Everything always changes...

Last time I was there, Cousin Brucie was broadcasting live - his AM radio show! I am a dinosaur...
Carole: You know some things should never change. Coney Island is such a landmark even to those like me who have never been there but I certainly have heard a lot about it through the years. I hope a historical group can step in and stop it.
I've never been to Coney Island, and I'd love to go and ride those coasters. I hope they will still be there. Thanks for the great photo shoot.

Missy, It's going to be year round upscale...I believe hotels. Coney Island has been a fun, affordable place and I hope they save what they can of it.
Candice, They have tried to stop it...the advocacy groups. Unfortunately it's what New York does. Rips down the historic and rezones.
Sandy, I believe it will be hotels and condos....I'd guess it's beachfront and they can make much more money with that :(
Gary, It does and Coney Island is certainly run down but it can be preserved. You know what they do to New York, you lived here and there's not much left of what used to be here. So sad.

Donna, They have tried and while the rebuilding project is stalled, it's scheduled to begin. We'll see but I'm betting it's lost :(
Robin, The Cyclone will still be there....I don't think anyone would want to see that gone. One of the last Wooden Coasters, you'll be able to ride it!
Did the folks fight it? In Ann Arbor is is HARD to get anything torn down, even trees.

I heard in 1999 when we were there that it would be "closing soon." Glad to see that it's still fighting.
