It is unusual for me to be called for a Feng Shui Consultation when the occupants AREN'T having some issues or life changing events. Sometimes they feel the "energy" is just off in their space, sometimes it is for health issure or relationship problems or career changes and they've heard or read about Feng Shui (or lately, The Secret) which has touched off a ripple effect in the way people are now reacting to the principles of Feng Shui. They are the same with additional principles of how their home or office surroundings may be affecting them in some way.
I was more then surprised, then, to get called for this particular consultation. And so was my client's partner. He was looking forward to a day off from work and only was told that morning that I was coming. Neither of us knew about the other until I got there....
I wasn't called because of any particular issues, in fact they were both doing quite well. But my client has a strong interest in Feng Shui and his partner didn't. Or, as he told me in a very respectful way, was a total skeptic. And had plans for that day. Not knowing quite how to handle this after seeing the look of disappointment on the client who had called, I asked him if he could just stay for 15 minutes. It's not much time but it was better then nothing and he was kind enough to agree.
A few words about the apartment and it's occupants: It had a wonderful "feeling" from the minute I stepped inside. A big principle of Feng Shui is to let the OUTDOOR energy IN. And clearly this had that. I am also an art lover and one of my clients was showing in galleries, both in the US and internationally as his father had been a wonderful artist and my client loved showing and selling his lovely works of art. His partner owned his own business with a partner and it was going well; as a matter of fact, if there were any issues it was that his business was growing SO fast that he wasn't finding the time for himself right now.
I had 15 minutes and we sat down. As I tried to relay the principles of Feng Shui, how it works and why, I could see I wasn't getting through. I typically will explain the Bagua first to a client, give them principles and go over different topics prior to going through the space. I needed to change my thinking on this---and FAST. I thought to go through the apartment, explaining the bagua as I went to actually SHOW them the space and principles and topics while I went. I could see a few "A ha" moments on his face and didn't know as we went if he was going to stay or leave. The problem was, if there is one, that there wasn't much to be changed in the apartment.
Starting at the front door I explained what we do to address Careers and why. Then to the bathroom, what we mean when we talk about "drain" energy and such things as keeping the door closed, the seat down and a plant to deflect from the toilet. And mirrors---mirrors, among other things, magnify and intensify energy and I've seen through the years that often the medicine cabinet (which is usually mirrored) reflects back a blank wall. Not in this place, the artwork was up but I saw some of the things I was saying starting to make sense. On to the bedroom. If any room was out of balance, it was the bedroom. I am careful of the artwork in a bedroom and felt that a picture that more clearly had two people in it would be better. Another "A ha" moment. Also the sides weren't balanced and the bedroom should not be used for work.
I walked the apartment with them, showed them different areas and things to add and noticed that his partner had somewhere along the line "gotten it." I love when people are open to different ways of looking at things and many things made sense to him. While I honor a strict privacy policy, they were both gracious enough to allow me to share these photos of their lovely home. The consultation ended with his partner saying he would ask HIS partner at work to have a consult for his office. Some pictures of their lovely space:
The only room out of balance...there was a desk on the other side. I suggested adding a matching piece of furniture as work should not be done in a bedroom if it can be helped. And changing the artwork over the bed. Kudos for no TV in the bedroom!
This room was an extra bedroom with another bathroom and just "felt" good. It was used for out of town guests and as a workspace. An "unprotected back" is not recommended in Feng Shui and this chair faced away from the door. Adding a mirror to see behind you is all that was needed.
Another view of this room. It's difficult to see the rug which pulled all the lovely colors together.
Look at the beautiful artwork along the walls and the one directly in the center. The beautiful lights follow through into both the living and dining areas to show the lovely artwork that lines the walls. And the "outside" is definitely IN.
All the elements are addressed. The only suggestion here was to put something behind the pillar. It is the "Wealth" area and ended in a corner. In Feng Shui, energy can get stuck and "pool" in a corner so we try not to leave them unaddressed.
Ah, sharp cutting knives. We don't like them out for obvious reasons. And the stove in direct opposition to the refrigerator....hot and cold energies colliding in a small space. Using a small mirror will help address this.
That's my stuff on the table....and you can see a picture that his father did. The views from this apartment were Amazing, looking down into Central Park and even on smaller rooftops. There were alot of bbq's and parties going on.
And a nice little find on a building outside.
My last blog showed Feng Shui problems, this one had very few changes to make. I did suggest plants, as I always do for Life Force but they travelled so much it wasn't practical. A good time to use silk plants. I was specifically careful not to show their beautiful artwork collection but you can see it lining the walls in the living room. This client was so in touch he had already done a beautiful job. And a skeptic turned believer. Thank you to these wonderful people for allowing me to show their own sacred space.

Carole - as I read your story I feel as though I just had a great meditation. I am out of body reading and hanging onto your every word. Lovely - thank you.
Carole...I learn a little more every time I read!
Thank you
This was a very interesting post Carole ! I love how you describe these homes, I have the feeling I am being guided from room to room. The statue outside is extremely interesting. What does it represent ?
I just got home from an end of the season party I was attending for my dance class ( I take jazz dance two nights a week ) . One of my dance friends was telling me about a house next door to her that has sold 12 times in the past 16 years. She said every couple that buys it ends up getting divorced. I wonder what is going on inside the house ? I would love to have you go through it and give your opinion. A single man has just bought it now and my friend told him 'Whatever you do, don't get married!'.
Hope you are having a nice evening,
Jo
Carole, I have to confess that I never heard of Feng Shui until I joined AR. And I still had to do a search on the internet to find out what it meant. I always associate it with your work. Good job.
Thank you for the lovely comments. I always think it's so brave of homeowners to allow me to show their space! The views were absolutely spectacular from this apartment, it was the 29th floor in a building that went up to 52 floors......I can't even imagine what it looked like from there! I don't know what that represents on the building but you'll see so many things in New York Architecture it's amazing. I just happened to spot that.
Jo-Anne, thank you for the question. Feng Shui practitioners believe very strongly in "Predecessor Energy" --the energy left behind by former occupants. And I do as well. People that have left a place to move up in the world and are happy leave behind favorable energy where as a home left in divorce or a foreclosure leaves unfavorable energy...sadness and separation, arguments and unhappiness. We always "space clear" a person's home to remove predecessor energy and make it their own.
Leon, I'm glad it spurred an interest. The first year I did tracking for my website was 2004 and my average "hits" a month were 300. Now they average 1500. What an increase!
Carole,
Thanks for sharing--I'm reading the book you suggested and your photos and comments help me pull it together even more.
