The Feng Shui Home---Feng Shui on Long Island New York---A Home in Roslyn

The Feng Shui Home-Feng Shui on Long Island New York-A Roslyn Home

As a New York Feng Shui Consultant, I am in different homes on Long Island, New York City, Queens, Brooklyn and beyond.  I love working with my clients to address Feng Shui issues that might be found in their homes.

The front door should not be directly opposite a staircase.  In many schools of thought in Feng Shui, when you enter one of these homes your energy will automatically "sweep" up.  We sometimes forget Energy is supposed to flow through a space, it is not supposed to struggle to get around.

Some of our homes just need less furniture or furniture with "rounded corners" to deflect what we think of as "cutting chi" or "cutting sha"....Sharp points that can cut right into your Energy field.   I have, on a few rare occasions, seen homes that were built with Feng Shui principles.  I believe builders will soon become more apt to build to suit their clients wishes.

It is astounding how quickly Feng Shui has grown in the last decade.  When I began my Feng Shui Business in New York about 13 years ago, almost no one knew what Feng Shui WAS.  Now, almost everyone I meet has some knowledge, interest and understanding of it.

This home in Roslyn Long Island New York is a beauty.  However, I doubt they will continue building this way.  My client did know about the sweep of Energy that can occur and although she had addressed it by deflecting the swift upward sweep, she wondered what else she could do.

I recommended a crystal...I love crystals although I use them sparingly in Feng ShuiRound, faceted crystals, among other things, help to DIFFUSE Energy and keep it flowing through a space. I also recommended to my client that she put something on the landing upstairs to help stop the feeling of upward motion and to feel more grounded.

In Feng Shui, we always look for BALANCE.  I suggested she balance the lovely artwork on BOTH sides to direct the eye.  Some Feng Shui Consultants might suggest a mirror at the top of the staircase but I always hold a mirror up before hanging it to get the feeling of it.  In this particular case, it intensified the upward sweep.

There is no one solution for everyone who wants to make a Feng Shui Cure.  There are general guidelines in Feng Shui but each home or business must be evaluated individually.  See how it FEELS after you make a change and don't be afraid, you can always correct it.

Hey Carole, do you happen to know of any Feng Shui experts in the Kansas City area? I am toying with the idea of giving a consultation to a client who is buying a home here. Thanks! Maria Morton morton@prukc.com

I like that thought about the cutting edges of furniture Carole. You are so very good in your field. I really appreciate all that is you.

I have a dear friend in Tennessee that built a beautiful home on a mountain top.  Went up to visit, walked in and got a chill.  When you walk in the front door you are 2 feet from the first stair step.  And you have to close the door behing you to go into the living room or the family room.  It's a gorgeous house ... but it feels cold and uncaring.  Not like her at all!

As always, you have very sound suggestions and advice. It's who you are and how you do it that make you the professional and experienced Feng Shui Consultant in your area!

Carole - Carole knows best !  Stephanie mentioned this same concept on some recent showings that we did where immediately you have the stairs up.  It makes sense.  The crystal seems to be a great idea !

Carole, my front door is directly opposite the stairs too, but I've placed a massive piece of art at the bottom of the stairs and another huge piece of art halfway up the stairs, and a big plant at the top of the stairs on the landing (along with some other artwork facing the stairs...)...

Sometimes I put a piece of furniture in front of the door (there's about 12 feet between door and stairs).... so that you don't see the stairs, but instead see an armoir, which you have to walk around, to go up the stairs.

I change it all the time, because I don't like the fact that when you open the front door, you can see right up the stairs ... but I never know what's better, or what feels better when people walk in.

If only we could design our own homes, with all these principles in mind ...

And I will do just that, as soon as I win the lottery. :)
And you will have to come over and work with the architect. :)

(just count the days ... the next jackpot is $20,000,000 ... and it's probably enough)

Hannah, Most of the time when we unclutter our spaces we unclutter our lives.  Good point, our surroundings affect us so profoundly.

HI Maria, I will email you.  I can tell you that would be a life changing gift....many of my clients purchase a consultation for someone else and it's a hit!

Gary, It's something I advise my clients when choosing new furniture--the perfect opptunity to look for "Feng Shui" friendly furniture.

Carol, I know the feeling you are describing and the Front Door is so important in Feng Shui.  Occasionally a builder understands some of the basic principles but here homeowners are starting to demand it.  That's a good sign.

Crystal, They are so pretty when the sunlight catches them and reflects off them.  They can do many different things in Feng Shui, in this case help diffuse the Energy so it doesn't just go upstairs.

Sally, Both of us are very fortunate to be doing 'work' that we love!  I see so many unhappy people out there that hate their jobs and it's so sad.

Christopher & Stephanie, Some builers are starting to get it.  Their clients are starting to demand some of the basic Feng Shui principles and although it's taken a while, it's a good thing to see.

Sylvie, Don't change it too often, you are moving Energy every time you do that.  The plant on the landing is a wonderful place for grounding and to stop the flow of Energy from going straight up but you have lots of space in between the front door and it seems from your description the Energy can still flow into the house.

The art work is wonderful to deflect the eye.  It sounds like you've made some great changes!  Ah, yes, the lottery. You play Canada and I'll play the US :)

This staircase seems very steep Carole.  I thinkthat may have added to the problem.  I love that each of your solutions is personalized.  There is no ABC approached but each case must be examined to find the best solution for that situation.  I learn so much from you.  Thanks for sharing.

I always wondered what it was that was uncomfortable when door opened into the stairway... this certainly makes sense.  Your suggestions on how to energize the flow are remarkable.  This is certainly something that comes up in some of the older homes that have so much charm.  It is good to know there are ways to work with this type of challenge.

Hi Carole! Very interesting facts.  We had a house once that had a front door opening directly to the staircase.  Never did feel "settled" in that house and didn't know why.

Is it true that if bedroom doors open to each other the people who sleep there will always be fighting?

I like the idea of rounded corners to soften the harsher spaces. All very interesting! Thank you Carole :-)

Paddy, It was one STEEP staircase, that's for sure.  We always need to look into the decor of someone's home so we can institute cures that go with the scheme of the home or business.  Thank you for your comment--and welcome home!

Joan, This was a beautiful and relatively new home on Long Island.  And building like this may deter buyers in the future.  There are many people already that would walk in--and out again.  Builders hopefully will learn what their clients are looking for.

Tami, I was thrilled to see you back again!  I'm glad you survived a difficult time and I hoped you'd be back:)

Al & Peggy, I believe you are thinking of what we call "arguing doors" which are doors that when opened together will hit or bump eachother.  They go by other names as well (such as "biting doors") but doors represent VOICES in Feng Shui.  It is believed that too many doors in a space or doors that hit or bump each other can promote arguments but there is a "cure" !

HI Mara, Rounded corners are what I suggest to my clients when choosing new furniture....and I personally love the way it looks.  It doesn't cause "cutting chi" and allows Energy to flow through a space.
