There's nothing Nicer then these Emails: In Feng Shui AND REAL ESTATE!

There IS nothing nicer then getting a call or email from anyone you are working with to thank you and let you know that what you did helped them.  It's even nicer when it's from an Activerain Realtorwho had found me and contacted me about Feng Shui.  I am not going to reveal who this person is, that would be entirely up to them but I did get a contact from Activerain from someone who had stumbled on one of my posts on Feng Shui and we spoke on the phone.

She had already taken Suzee Miller's online course on Feng Shui and she is also a home stager.  But it was her home she was most interested in selling and despite the changes she had made, nothing had worked.  She contacted me for some thoughts and ideas and I wanted to help her.  I can't comment on Suzee's Miller's course because I have never seen it so I don't know what it entails.  I do know that it's very expensive and did not charge her because she had already paid for a course.

My first question to her was if the Blessings were included.  Since I believe so much in them I was curious to know and she replied that they weren't.  Since they are considered "sacred" because they are so old, I made the unusual decision to work with her and include the blessings.  We spoke on the phone, I received emails and, more importantly pictures and we worked together to change some things in her home that had already been changed.  There was nothing difficult or expensive that needed to be done, just some things I felt were out of balance.

I got a phone call within two weeks and while she didn't yet sell HER house, she sold one of her listings!  Which she had blessed.   She had not expected to sell this because it was only on the market less then two months but a deal was reached and we were both thrilled.  We have spoken and emailed back and forth and while she found a neighborhood she liked, she had not found a HOME she LOVED.  I felt that it was key to selling HER home and then she walked into one and, you guessed it, fell in love!  She was home.  She wrote to tell me she'd found a home that she finally loved and was worried about making an offer on it without her home being sold.  And on that I won't advise.  If her home did NOT sell, that would be a big financial risk.....I left it to her to make the decision.

And today I got my "happy email."  The first four words?  "I SOLD my home."  The inspector is coming tomorrow and she will put in an offer for a new, loved home!  I am thrilled for her (as she knew I would be!) and am waiting to hear whether her inspection AND her offer go through.

It would be nice hearing it from her and maybe someday you will....but perhaps she is just not comfortable posting anything because of the controversy on whether Feng Shui WORKS.   It does---learn even some of it, put it into use and you'll also be helping your clients as well as yourself!  Another happy Activerain story.

Feng Shui in Riverhead, Long Island, New York---A Makeover by Feng Shui Long Island

One of my favorite things to get calls for in Feng Shui are for Renovations.  I love consulting on the Colors, Decorating, new furniture additions and the placement of it and I love to watch it as it comes "alive."  I have found myself out east on Long Island, New York lately (in Laurie Mindnich's neck of the woods:) and after consulting on this client's home, was called for her and her husband's new business, to be opening soon.

I had mentioned in a previous post about a client I have done recently and her business is called YOGA ROCKS and kept thinking what a wonderful tie in this is.  I also blogged recently about the homeowner with the spiral staircase in the "Heart" of the home and she would be interested in this place as well for her children.  It is called C.H.A.T.S. (Children's Health and Therapeutic Services) and is a new Pediatric Clinic that will be serving children from birth to 21 years old.  Their services include a state of the art facility (including ROCK climbing and a sensory gym), occupational and physical therapy and speech and language therapy.  A natural approach to healing, something Feng Shui is an extension of.

This is a transformation IN PROGRESS.  A beautiful older home located right on the Riverhead Traffic Circle, the renovations will be extensive. Color choices were important here, as well as anywhere, to provide stimulation for the children for a multi-disciplinary approach to healing.  While I have consulted on quite a few wellness centers, these last two centered around children and I love the fact that so many people are finally in tune with a more natural and less invasive way to help children.  This lovely place is using Feng Shui Principles in it's complete approach.

These are some of the "in progress" pictures and I will show the end results to you when they are done. But it gives you an idea of the beautiful colors and different areas to meet the needs of children.

UPDATED: Suffering from Hoof and Mouth Disease? Feng Shui Perspectives and the Truth...

Let me say first that I have to get personal with my clients.  Sometimes VERY personal.  If I don't know what their particular issues are, I am not going to be able to help them as best I can.  Most of my clients fully understand this and I am always careful to be two things:  HONEST (as I see things) and MINDFUL.  Sometimes achieving both is a difficult balance.

I am also a Sagittarius.  Which means in most cases we suffer from "Hoof and Mouth Disease" or always putting our foot in our mouths.  So I'm careful to try the best I can to work around that as well....it's a fineline.  About two months ago I did Feng Shui Consultation for a lovely couple in New York City, right in Midtown Manhattan.  And I ask questions:  The history of the home/apartment and if they knew why the former occupants left and, among other things, what they would best like to accomplish from a consultation.  And then I sit and LISTEN.  Not only to WHAT they are saying but the WAY THEY ARE SAYING IT.

Two things were on my client's mind.  Her relationship with her husband (who was present) and the fact that in the last two years, she had redone her bathroom three times, not being happy with the outcome.  I hadn't yet addressed the apartment but of course realized that is excessive energy in a space with almost constant renovations.  And I pictured it to be a complete disaster.

Starting the walk through of the apartment I realized this couple, in spite of their difficulties, really LOVEDeach-other.  But there have been so many years of arguing (or, in their words "nitpicking") that they were also resentful of each-other over things that neither of them could help.  In my eyes from what I saw and heard that day, I could almost see them as "The Perfect Couple."  A beautiful apartment, a lovely child and a new business venture which I believe to be successful.  They could be one of the ones that have it all....but one has to break that old pattern of resentment to start changing things around.

If you haven't guessed by now, the bathroom was located in their RELATIONSHIP area.  And had been renovated three times already.  Stirring up a lot of energy each time.  It certainly was far from a disaster...there were a few knicks and "pings" but it actually was lovely---and completely undecorated.  No pictures, nothing pretty or pleasant in there.  I pointed out the fact that it was in their relationship area and some things have to be worked around, overlooked, as it wasn't perfection but it had a few flaws.  We ALL have flaws.  And that it had been left unaddressed.  I left that day and knew they got the connection between their lives and their surroundings.

I got a follow up phone call about two weeks later and spoke to my client about breaking that wall that had been built up.  One of them had to do it and see things from another perspective.  And perhaps because I asked her to do it, she felt I was blaming her;  this is NOT the case.  But I wonder if in telling her again that she should be the one to do it, she took it as blame.  I have not heard from her since and she has not answered my email or my voicemail.  I wonder, if after all this time, if I should rethink HOW I do things.  How do you be honest with someone when honestly can be misconstrued, no matter how hard to try to give the information the best you can?  Should I become less personal?  Or should I just let this go?  I briefly thought of writing a short note but feel I am being invasive at this point.  So, let it go??  And get a better mouthwash and move on---or try one more time to contact her?

**I have received many updates lately and haven't had time to update them yet.  This just happened today and I was SO happy (and relieved) to get a call from this client.  She told me that she had just been very, very busy and apologized for not getting back to me.  She also told me that she took my suggestions, changed her space and her previous way of thinking and her relationship with her husband has never, EVER been better.  These are the calls that make my day!

Following Your Own Journey: Reflections of a Dream Realized in Feng Shui

I received a call tonight from an old friend who now lives in Syosset.  A friend from Junior High School, we had spent all of our High School years together and I recalled a wonderful post I had just read by Jo-Anne Smith Who Are The 'Forever' People in Your Life?   Although I did not know it at the time, Donna was to become one of my few treasured "Forever People."  She called because she had just dressed and sent her daughter off to her Prom which made her nostalgic; she said she was thinking of US and the prom we had gone to with our old dates and the fun we'd had that night.

We spoke at length, first reliving the old days and catching up with the new.  She is in a good place in her life right now and I realized, so was I.  Although we followed vastly different paths and both had our ups and downs through the years, we were happy.  With the way we had lived our lives, risen above our failures and marveled about our triumphs.

I didn't know for many years what I wanted to do when I grew up.  And during the years I went from job to job, learning something new and when I had learned it, I grew bored.  The very first time I had heard of Feng Shui I was absolutely drawn to it.  And when they were putting the very first class together from a licensed, accredited school and you could become Certified, I knew I was going to be there.  Looking back, I put a lot on the line.  My children were young, I had a house to worry about and finances were tighter then they had ever been.

And I encountered more negativity then I expected.  From EVERYONE.  Most people didn't know what it was and those that did scoffed at it.  And told me I would never "make it."  Well, for many years I didn't, not solely as a Feng Shui Practitioner.  I worked a full time job during the week and did Feng Shui on the weekends....not very much time to have fun.  But I was working for a goal, to become a full time consultant.  And I am thrilled that I've accomplished that.  It was truly a dream (and a far fetched one at that) and became a reality.

When I work with clients, I know they have dreams as well and I encourage them to talk about them.  And then to make the time to follow them.  The ones that have been able to break the old patterns and get back to some of the things they love are living happier lives right now.  It's the things you've put aside, not taken the time to do that you love because of work that you will most regret.  For those of you that have created the balance, congratulations....and for those of you that haven't, work hard at your goals but don't forget the things you LOVE.

"Should I Buy this House?" New Hyde Park, Long Island-- Questions a Feng Shui Consultant gets ALL the Time...And some difficult decisions

I receive many emails from people asking questions and am happy to answer them.  Last night I received an email from someone I do not know, inquiring about the purchase of a home in New Hyde Park, Long Island, New York.  He has been reading about Feng Shui and believes very much in Vastu, the Indian equivalent to Feng Shui and was worried about the home, although he had submitted an offer on it.

The property of the home is not "squared" off, rather it is in a triangle shape.  Meaning, to many consultants, that it would "cut out" both his relationship area AND his wealth area.  Is this good Feng Shui?  Actually, it's not....and in thinking it over I couldn't think of ONE consultant that I know that would have advised him to purchase this home.

And then he called me and emailed me some pictures.  I was agonizing what to tell him because he clearly loved this home.  My daughter who has studied with me on and off for the last five years heard me speaking to him and knew I wasn't sure what to tell him.  And asked me what I would do if I loved a home with "BAD" Feng Shui.  And a really difficult decision became quite easy.....I'd buy it and CHANGE it.  Unlike some consultants, I don't believe that things cannot be changed simply and inexpensively.  And she gave me my answer.

When I was speaking to the client I told him exactly that.  That if it were me, I would buy it and change it with enhancements.  Over the years I have seen clients purchase a home or business that has an absolutely negative Feng Shui aspect and change it with their own Energy and Intentions; and found that THEIR energy is stronger to overcome a situation that others would have deterred them from.

I heard an audible sigh of relief with this man when I told him.  He said he had seen many other homes but felt that "This was IT."  And I believe him.  I made the offhand remark to him that I truly believe you don't always choose a home, sometimes a HOME chooses YOU---and he laughed and said I was absolutely right. A home can draw us in for one reason or another and there is something we simply "connect" with.  And it's meant to be ours.  I wish this man all the wonders and happiness in his new home!

A TREASURE found on Long Island---The "Gold Coast" of Oyster Bay

After having been on a few Feng Shui consultations recently on the North Shore of Long Island (which I now LOVE!), I wasn't surprised to hear from a client in Laurel Hollow in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. She had recently began working with Reiki and was working very much with Energy.  She is the owner of a lovely place she conceived of and opened three years ago and they were already preparing to move to a larger space; prior to the move she was having a difficult time figuring out her furniture placement and working with Feng Shui which prompted her call.  The name of her business is "YOGA ROCKS" and I believe it's time has come.  It is a Yoga place primarily for CHILDREN and their parents who are seeking a more wholistic way to attune their children to alternative healing techniques.

She has had particular success with children with such disorders as ADD and ADHD.  Yoga helps them to focus and their reports from ALL their physicians had improved due to their ability to keep focused on whatever other treatments they were receiving, such as Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy.  Even reading and math scores went up.  I love healing modalities that do not include medication unless absolutely necessary.  We relate Feng Shui to a natural form of healing.

Her home was located on a huge estate in land that had formerly been owned by Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts.  We discussed her rearrangement of furniture and using exactly what she had would be able to create the type of atmosphere she was seeking which was to have friends over and a place to entertain them.  Her new home was small, this was originally the garage turned "Artist's Studio" on the property of the main home on the property.  Organizing help and just a redesign to help the furniture work together was all that she needed.

What caught me completely by surprise was when I went outside to evaluate her property.  Outside her front door was the place where she parked and just beyond that a small grotto.  But let me back up a minute.  We were taught years ago when going to a consultation to look for "Signs" along the way.  While I was on the expressway I saw something I couldn't quite see clearly.  It was flying across the sky and I could see it waving in the wind...it wasn't a huge flag, it appeared to be a dollar bill....which of course would have meant abundance.  I couldn't get close enough to make it out for sure but it certainly wasn't one of the blimps we have here on Long Island.

My client preferred I did not take pictures of her personal space but she did allow me to show you the outside.  And a treasure in Oyster Bay, Long Island.

Feng Shui Oyster BayThe sign, if you can't read it, says "Lourdes Hill."  When I asked my client about it, she said the owner relayed there have been "sightings" there and a grotto was built to honor them.

Feng Shui Long IslandA closer picture of the amazing Grotto.  This was right outside her front door, obscured by her car.  What beautiful energy to let in!  And the other "sign" which I believe was abundance, I think she will do VERY well!

Driving just a few feet up from her home is the North Shore of Long Island. The town is Laurel Hollow, in Oyster Bay, New York.  The pictures were so beautiful I thought you might like to see them:

I believe not only the concept of her business but her energy and surroundings, in and out, are going to cause her to be well known one day.  Remember, Yoga ROCKS!

Nothing is Further then your Own Backyard

Every once in a while when I'm home, I catch a show I really like.  It's on the Discovery Channel and it's called "I Shouldn't be Alive."  It is done partly in reenactments and includes the people who have actually had some horrible experience where, statistically at least, they should not have been able to live through it.  Yet they did.  Some call it miraculous intervention, some call it very strong willpower and others call it sheer energy.  It's so intangible to some and so evident to others.

If you watch until the end of the show you will discover most have gone on to write books about their experience or become a motivational speakers.  And there is a common thread among ALL of them.  They are always asked about how the experience has changed their lives and it has to every single one of them.  They are SO grateful and blessed to just get up in the morning and be ALIVE.  They view everything differently now.  And are thankful for every single minute.

I wonder, sometimes, why we have to go through such a traumatic experience or similar situation to appreciate life.  It was taught to us years ago that the more we count our blessings, the more we will get.  Even the blessings that come from a dark cloud----which I remember my Grandmother always telling me had a silver lining.  Too bad it took so many years for my Grandmother's advice and sayings to finally sink in.  It's sad as well that it will often take an accident, a tragedy or a serious illness to make us become grateful for all that we have and love. For everything we have been given to treasure that we see every day and somehow manage to look beyond until we don't see all the WONDERS anymore.  The wonderful thing is, you don't have to look for the good or happiness....didn't Dorothy say it's never further then your own backyard?

A Peek inside a Monastery: A respectful way of life in Old Westbury, Long Island, New York by Feng Shui Long Island

It occurred to me that most of you, the majority in fact, would most likely never see the inside of a beautiful place; a Monastery.  A Monastery is defined as " a place of residence occupied by a community of persons, especially Monks living in seclusion under Religious Vows."  When Professor Lin Yun arrived her in the early 1980's, he decided to open a Monastery.  His original one is located in Berkely, California and his second one is right here on Long Island, in Old Westbury (The Gold Coast).

Most of the monks that live at the Monastery take care of the land and any work that needs to be done.  In addition, most of them are under a "vow of silence."  This is a beautiful and amazing place but several years ago, residents in the community decided this lovely place was a "cult."  For some reason, the most respectful people in the world were fighting to stay in the Monastery.  Thankfully, they won.  They hold occasional important weddings there and graduations of Black Sect Feng Shui Students who have become Certified in Feng Shui Studies.  Last year I was honored for having reached ten years under this certification.

It is not a well known fact that anyone can put up a website and write that they are a Feng Shui Consultant.  There are some people on the internet that have read a book, perhaps and put up a website as they saw this as a quick way to earn some money.  Not only are many not Certified, since there are no standards in the industry, they have anywhere from a three year course to a two day online course at which time they will mail you a Certificate.  If Feng Shui has touched a nerve with any of you, look for Certification and check the actual school your consultant attended.  If you see it has online courses, RUN.  The principles of Energy must be felt and students of good schools will often attend "site" visits with a Mentor to actually get the "feelings" of homes and businesses.  And check how long they have been practicing; nothing can make up for a number of years of experience.

Since I love to show pictures, this is a peek inside the Monastery at Old Westury, Long Island, New York.  Formally opened quite often, you now need a special invitation to get in because of the controversy over this lovely place.

A New York City Apartment---Feng Shui Style

It is unusual for me to be called for a Feng Shui Consultation when the occupants AREN'T having some issues or life changing events.  Sometimes they feel the "energy" is just off in their space, sometimes it is for health issure or relationship problems or career changes and they've heard or read about Feng Shui (or lately, The Secret) which has touched off a ripple effect in the way people are now reacting to the principles of Feng Shui.  They are the same with additional principles of how their home or office surroundings may be affecting them in some way.

I was more then surprised, then, to get called for this particular consultation.  And so was my client's partner.  He was looking forward to a day off from work and only was told that morning that I was coming.  Neither of us knew about the other until I got there....

I wasn't called because of any particular issues, in fact they were both doing quite well.  But my client has a strong interest in Feng Shui and his partner didn't.  Or, as he told me in a very respectful way, was a total skeptic.  And had plans for that day.  Not knowing quite how to handle this after seeing the look of disappointment on the client who had called, I asked him if he could just stay for 15 minutes.  It's not much time but it was better then nothing and he was kind enough to agree.

A few words about the apartment and it's occupants:  It had a wonderful "feeling" from the minute I stepped inside.  A big principle of Feng Shui is to let the OUTDOOR energy IN.  And clearly this had that.  I am also an art lover and one of my clients was showing in galleries, both in the US and internationally as his father had been a wonderful artist and my client loved showing and selling his lovely works of art.  His partner owned his own business with a partner and it was going well; as a matter of fact, if there were any issues it was that his business was growing SO fast that he wasn't finding the time for himself right now.

I had 15 minutes and we sat down.  As I tried to relay the principles of Feng Shui, how it works and why, I could see I wasn't getting through.  I typically will explain the Bagua first to a client, give them principles and go over different topics prior to going through the space.  I needed to change my thinking on this---and FAST.  I thought to go through the apartment, explaining the bagua as I went to actually SHOW them the space and principles and topics while I went.  I could see a few "A ha" moments on his face and didn't know as we went if he was going to stay or leave.  The problem was, if there is one, that there wasn't much to be changed in the apartment.

Starting at the front door I explained what we do to address Careers and why.  Then to the bathroom, what we mean when we talk about "drain" energy and such things as keeping the door closed, the seat down and a plant to deflect from the toilet.  And mirrors---mirrors, among other things, magnify and intensify energy and I've seen through the years that often the medicine cabinet (which is usually mirrored) reflects back a blank wall. Not in this place, the artwork was up but I saw some of the things I was saying starting to make sense.  On to the bedroom.  If any room was out of balance, it was the bedroom.  I am careful of the artwork in a bedroom and felt that a picture that more clearly had two people in it would be better.  Another "A ha" moment.  Also the sides weren't balanced and the bedroom should not be used for work.

I walked the apartment with them, showed them different areas and things to add and noticed that his partner had somewhere along the line "gotten it."  I love when people are open to different ways of looking at things and many things made sense to him.  While I honor a strict privacy policy, they were both gracious enough to allow me to share these photos of their lovely home.  The consultation ended with his partner saying he would ask HIS partner at work to have a consult for his office.  Some pictures of their lovely space:

Feng Shui Consultant New YorkThe only room out of balance...there was a desk on the other side.  I suggested adding a matching piece of furniture as work should not be done in a bedroom if it can be helped.  And changing the artwork over the bed.  Kudos for no TV in the bedroom!

Feng Shui ManhattanThis room was an extra bedroom with another bathroom and just "felt" good.  It was used for out of town guests and as a workspace.  An "unprotected back" is not recommended in Feng Shui and this chair faced away from the door.  Adding a mirror to see behind you is all that was needed.

Feng Shui Long IslandAnother view of this room.  It's difficult to see the rug which pulled all the lovely colors together.

Feng Shui New York CityLook at the beautiful artwork along the walls and the one directly in the center.  The beautiful lights follow through into both the living and dining areas to show the lovely artwork that lines the walls.  And the "outside" is definitely IN.

Feng Shui DecoratingAll the elements are addressed.  The only suggestion here was to put something behind the pillar.  It is the "Wealth" area and ended in a corner.  In Feng Shui, energy can get stuck and "pool" in a corner so we try not to leave them unaddressed.

Feng Shui New York CityAh, sharp cutting knives. We don't like them out for obvious reasons.  And the stove in direct opposition to the refrigerator....hot and cold energies colliding in a small space.  Using a small mirror will help address this.

Feng Shui AdviceThat's my stuff on the table....and you can see a picture that his father did.  The views from this apartment were Amazing, looking down into Central Park and even on smaller rooftops.  There were alot of bbq's and parties going on.

Feng Shui CuresAnd a nice little find on a building outside.

My last blog showed Feng Shui problems, this one had very few changes to make.  I did suggest plants, as I always do for Life Force but they travelled so much it wasn't practical.  A good time to use silk plants.  I was specifically careful not to show their beautiful artwork collection but you can see it lining the walls in the living room.  This client was so in touch he had already done a beautiful job.  And a skeptic turned believer.  Thank you to these wonderful people for allowing me to show their own sacred space.

Jones Beach, Long Island, New York---Nothing like it in the World!

I grew up at Jones Beach.  We lived in Wantagh, Long Island (my mother still lives there) and the sign by our house calls it The Gateway to Jones Beach.  I had some time the other day and it was beautiful and sunny out--a perfect day for the beach (or so I thought).  I headed out with my daughter for our first trip this year and the drive alone is lovely.  When you get close to the water and can see and smell the salt air it feels so different from only a 15 minute drive away!

For some reason the beach was shrouded in Fog....it wasn't just drifting in, it was actually rolling in.  But it was warm and it didn't stop anyone, least of all us.  Taking a walk on the boardwalk is a wonderful way to work out or just get some exercise.  It tells you how far you have walked and many people run the boardwalk every day, even in the winter.  You also pass some wonderful things that I thought I'd share.

A few facts about Jones Beach that I love:  It is actually called Jones Beach Island because it is attached to Long Island by the Meadowbrook parkway (Where, incidentally, the filming of the Toll Booth Scene for The Godfather was shot).  They used to have wonderful Jazz players at the Restaurant at Jones Beach (which was built in 1966 and had the most spectacular water views).  Ozzie Nelson, among others played there frequently.  Robert Moses built the first beach but many, many people contributed to this beautiful beach.  Interestingly enough, I am in possession of an old will from Samuel Jones---another of it's contributors.  This was given to me after doing the Community Service Project in Bayville, Long Island, last year.  I hadn't known when I started that he had made not only a contribution to the beach but also left $15,000 to board members to build a non profit center for the elderly.  That is The Jones Manor in Bayville, Long Island and they have remained non profit all these years though some very difficult times.  Many of my clients are generous to donate money to them when they see it!

Back to the Beach:  If you've never been to Jones Beach, it's a Must See in New York.  If you lived in New York, you probably miss it---I would.  Here's some pictures of a fog shrouded day in one of the prettiest places on the Island:

Feng Shui New YorkThe Boardwalk, which goes over 6 miles is a lovely walk/run and tells you how far you've gone.  It's also dotted with pictures of the way Jones Beach used to look. The right side of this picture is a place for more games, lots of shuffleboard among other things.

Nassau County Feng ShuiHard to see due to the fog, but this is The Nikon Theatre at Jones Beach.  The entire top was added only a few years ago to accommodate more people.  The left side with the tents is VIP---good food, beer and lounge seats.  You are looking out onto the Bay part of the water and at night the stars are SO big.  I love concerts and this is my favorite venue.

New York Feng ShuiNo one minded the fog...we just couldn't figure out why they were standing!

New York City Feng ShuiThe building has started right on Field 4 for the new Restaurant Donald Trump is building.  And yes, it is being Feng Shui'ed!  To quote from him, "I don't know HOW Feng Shui works but I know it works!"  ( You did know I was going to get that in somehow, right? :)
