Active Rain is SAVING me Money!

Not just a little bit of money, actually a GREAT deal!  The thought just clicked as I was signing off, vowing to get OUT and do what I've been putting off.  Get OUT to enjoy this weather I've been waiting so long for!

And instead, I'm back at the computer.  I've switched addictions without even realizing it.  I'm not only getting work from AR, I was formerly an Ebay Addict.  It finally hit me that I haven't ebayed in WEEKS!  I'm thinking of all the things I didn't need, didn't know I wanted and then have to find room for when they come home :)

My latest purchase included this lovely (?) ummm....item.  I believe it's from Tibet, I believe it has something to do with a form of Astrology that incorporates The Three Lucks.  It has a Monkey, a mouse and of couse, a Dragon (Now I KNOW that's lucky).  I have no clue what it's worth (if anything) but I'm taking it to get framed (more money! :)

Thank you, ActiveRain.  For the work AND the savings!

A Homeowner's "Love Story"

Whenever I go to someone's home, I ask them if they know anything about the history of the house.  This is a story that a client told me not long ago and I thought it was worth sharing:

A married couple were looking for a home.  They each had different priorities on what were important to them as is the usual case.  For the wife, it was a big kitchen because she loved to cook.  The husband HAD to have a garage.  Usual things that a couple are likely to be looking for.

The Real Estate Agent they were working with had taken them to many homes.  Although they met the qualifications, neither one of them were "drawn" to a particular house.  A house came on the market and although it had no garage and a relatively small kitchen, he asked the couple if they would like to see it.  The husband told me that they fell in love with the home at first sight.  It was built in the 1950's and was never updated.  A nightmare to some, they LOVED the look. It was owned by an elderly gentleman who was the original owner and they had an opportunity to meet him and speak with him.

He told me he could see how much this man treasured his house.  He was being forced to move to go live with his children, he told them sadly.  My client conveyed to this man that they loved the house and if they were lucky enough to get it, he assured him he would take good care of it.

He put a bid on the house as well as someone else; the other person's bid was higher and my client just couldn't match the price.  But the seller remembered him and his wife and knew that the home would go to people that truly did love it.  Despite protests from his Agent AND his children, he sold it to my client and his wife.  I had never heard that before and wondered how many people would actually do that....

At closing my client said the man had tears in his eyes.  He thanked him over and over for accepting his bid and again assured him that it would be well taken care of.  Which the elderly man apparently knew.

I thought that was the end of the story but there's more:  This man never did go to live with his children, he was sadly put into a nursing home where he died just a short time later, just before my client was about to move in.  Having developed a connection to this man, my client was very saddened to hear that. On the day he was moving in, he said, he was bending down to unpack a box when he distinctly felt a hand on his back.  He was shocked (and a bit scared, I believe) until he thought about it and realized it was the man, wishing him luck and love in the home he cared so much about.

Long Ago Long Island, New York--Revisit the Year 1961

Just several weeks ago I was fortunate to have been sent some pictures of Wantagh, Long Island, New York; it's the town I was raised in.  My memories of growing up here are wonderful and the pictures reminded me of a long ago time there.  When traffic wasn't crazy, there was room to BREATHE, the doors weren't locked and all the neighbors not only knew each other, but got together once a week for card parties and barbeques!

I am only 15 minutes away from there now, but my mother still lives there in the same house. A house I believe she paid  $12,200 for right after the war and she and my father decided to move away from their families in Brooklyn; today the taxes on the house are $12,000.  Anyone growing up on Long Island might appreciate these pictures.  Especially if you remember Wantagh or Levittown.  We were allowed to walk to CherryWood Shopping Center and LIVED at Carvels in the summer.  Carvels is long gone and you actually take your life in your hands if you even TRY to park in Cherrywood.

Today my mother is the only original person on the block.  One by one all the neighbors left, some to move to warmer climates, some because they just couldn't afford Long Island any more.  But here are some shots of what it was and how wonderful it was to be raised in:

I LOVED getting these pictures.  They brought me back to an easier Long Island when it wasn't overcrowded and people weren't rushing everywhere.  But Spring is here, the BEST time to be on the Island...I hope some others remember these days as well.

A Palette Of Colors: Before and After pictures that come Alive with Color!

I LOVE to use color in a space.  And I love it more when my clients agree with me. Too often their tastes vary from white to off white :)  The following pictures are a few quick before and after shots of what we created with Color in a Wholistic Center.  The clients were thrilled (and so were the patients :)!  We wanted each treatment room to have it's own feel, depending on the service the patient was getting.  This is called the "Cafe of Life" in lovely Long Island, New York.

When your clients are open to painting, do they want to go the "safe" way?  I'm glad these people could see what color can do for a space!

P.S.  How do I separate the pictures????????  I'm trying :)

Giving Back? Or Getting Back? It was supposed to be a "Flop"

That's what they told me; my own Guild.  Trying to do a project on the scale has never been done before by ANY members of the Guild.  And if the project "flops" (their word, not mine), it will look like the Guild flopped.  I almost dropped the idea---almost.  Until my son stopped in one night when I had just gotten the letter discouraging me.  "Don't worry about it, we'll do it."  Right.  This is the kid who can't be bothered taking out the garbage.

But he didn't forget and I finally found a place that I wanted to go see.  With an interesting background. Samuel Jones, of Jones Beach fame left a $15,000 grant in his will to "the needy."  (In contrast to the $1,000 he left his wife, I'm sure SHE was pleased about that!).  1836. A board ran it and it had survived all these years.  They take in the elderly, the poor elderly I should say that otherwise would have no place to go, an increasing problem here on the Island.  We went to see the place, I got sad and my son got mad.  The deck (which opens up to a beautiful view of the water) was badly broken and the residents were stuck inside, year round.  Every room in the place was awful, they are totally non profit and badly overlooked, even by the government for grants.

I had in place two Guild members who said they would help.  Two.  Out of all the members on the Island and New York City.  Did we want to pick a room, the commitee asked us (I wasn't expecting to meet with a commitee).  And my son, the kid who can't pick his own socks up tells them HE is going to fix the deck.  He is actually sickened that the residents can't go outside.  And I am saddened by the rest of the place, there is not ONE nice room for them to go.  The residents crowd into a hallway and called it the Library.

Until I had spent days, hours, and lots of begging to get supplies, posting for volunteers, and everything started to fall into place, one of the two came to help.  She picked out the color of the conference room (that purple was NOT my choice!).  Purple is supposed to be the accent color for money in Feng Shui, you're not supposed to be bathed in it.  But it's the room where all the financial decisions are made...and it apparently worked.  We painted, decorated, did a lot of Shuing and hoping for more people to come in. The garbage still doesn't get taken out and socks are still on the floor, but my son spent days on the deck.  And if I can get the pictures up, you'll see the difference!  And I'm going back again this year; there's alot of truth in "It's better to Give then to Receive."  Which I wouldn't have known had I let people discourage me.

Dear Carole:

Barbara J. Edwards, R.N. Executive Director

r apologize for how long it has taken me to write. It does not mean that I do not think of you often and all the great things you have done for us. Just walking into the board room makes me smile. I also think your influence and that of your associates is working with a change in the atmosphere here. But there have been more concrete examples in the form of monetary gifts. We have received several gifts of cash, and two new private pay residents. In addition we received notice of a $ 20.000 grant from Senator Marcellino and a $ 150,000 grant from Nassau Country to replace our leaky roof. Dignitaries from the town attend the resident's birthday party, a group from Town Hall is holding a yoga class for the residents each Saturday, The Rotary Club is having lunch here this month, and the Mayor is holding a function here! Talk about energy you and your associated seem to have stirred up a lot of good energy at Jones Manor! Thank you,

*I apologize for the way the letter came out....it didn't scan right.  But this is my first picture post so I'm getting there:)

The Secret, Part Two---Yes, there are other "Secrets"

Having watched Larry King last night, it was interesting to hear the critics of "The Secret," the motivational DVD of the century. Don't rely on it, you were warned.  Many of us have for years and found out, it WORKS.

There are so many misconceptions about Feng Shui (and we work using the "secrets,") I thought I'd try to clear some up.  What does the secret teach you?  That you can have a life of prosperity and abundance in all areas, by setting Intentions, sending out good Energy and believing that it works.  You must take actions as well or opportunities may slip by you that you haven't even looked into.

Why is Energy so powerful?  This journey started when I became involved in Wholistic Health.  People that were given a limited amount of time to live by their doctors or had chronic, disabling illnesses would come in to work with Acupuncturists, Chinese Herbs, Amma Therapy and Biofeedback.  And I watched them as their attitude changed and they started to get well.  Seeing and being surrounded by these people, I wasn't sure HOW it worked, only that it did.  There was something to this Energy Healing.

It came as a natural extension to me that your surroundings, then could have a negative or positive impact on you as well; when you can't think straight and your mind is cluttered, it is likely your home or office is as well.  I attended the very first Certification course on Feng Shui Studies and this is what I learned:

For the principles of Feng Shui to work (working with Energy and The Laws of Attraction), we had to change our clients thought process.  To see things from a positive point of view, to teach them about Universal Laws and how the very energy of your thoughts can attract negative things back to you.  It's a difficult concept for many because it is hard to take responsibility for your own life.  But after speaking with them and reinforcing it, getting them to practice sending out positive energy, making some changes in their environment, they found it worked.

Many people still regard Feng Shui as simply a trend or a hoax.  It's much more then putting a plant in your wealth area, it is about the Laws of attraction.  We were taught that when you make a change in your environment, you can't simply make the change, it must be infused with Intention (or sending out what you wish to create back).  That is what will truly create transformations.

Our number one principle?  Clean up the clutter.  Clutter relates to the mind as well and if you're not clear in your surroundings, you won't be clear in your thoughts or actions.  Changing the flow of Energy might be moving the furniture around so that it has room to flow freely and not get "stuck."  Using the Bagua, you can make simple and inexpensive enhancements in every area of your life to attract more money, a new or improved relationship, even better health and careers.  Another misconception is that Feng Shui (A consultant and the changes) are expensive.  They don't need to be at all; many of my clients can't afford expensive items and can get wonderful things at Bed, Bath and Beyond that address Feng Shui.  We work with elements as well and they are: Fire, Water, Metal, Earth and Wood.  Many of these items you already have in your own home, we seek to achieve a balance of the elements.

From a Feng Shui perspective, the front door and the path leading to the front door is very important, it is considered "The Mouth of Chi" where all good energy enters.  What can we use there?  Solar lights to line the path, a wind-chime, a welcome sign to grace people in and a small waterfall when you enter.  We use plants for "life force" and crystals to diffuse energy and keep it flowing.  Nothing expensive there. Some consultants can charge up to $900 for a consultation of a home......Feng Shui was never meant to be about money, it was meant to help people and transform their lives.  Sounds like an overstatement, I know, except that I follow up with my clients (and oftentimes become friends with them) and I've seen what's it done in my life and theirs. So if someone is not Certified or is charging high prices, or instilling fear in people with "negative" Feng Shui they're likely not doing it for the right reasons.

We also use for homeowners a lot of the principles that Home Stagers, which I do as well, use but we use them from a different perspective.  A bowl of fruit on the table does incorporate colors, more then that, it is a sign of abundance.  Fresh flowers are pure life force and make people feel energized as well as incorporating the color Red, which is an enlivening and stimulating color.

Chances are if you're open to The Secret, you're already in tune with Feng Shui and don't even know it!  Because there are so many books with so many methods, it is too confusing to follow and understand and apply to your life. But certainly getting a Bagua (you can print one off Google Images) learning where your wealth area (or career or relationships) and making a few simple changes yourself while infusing it with your beliefs of what you wish to create, wouldn't hurt.  And just might help.

If you're staging a home, all of the above can be incorporated for very little cost and giving the homeowner a different perspective as well.  With their energy and yours, the results can be amazing.

Carole Provenzale

Hi All!

Thank you, Val, for getting me back into this site!  If I could figure out how to invite people (or accept them for that matter!) I would use it more often.

I'm afraid to asked what I missed, though I see the site has grown SO much!  How wonderful that is.  I believe finally Realtors are becoming more open to both Feng Shui (Thank goodness for The Secret :)! AND Home Staging which is so necessary in this market.

Feng Shui hit the West Coast more then 10 years ago but it took awhile for everyone to realize that it just wasn't the "Fad" they claimed it to be; because it works!  And the interest grew.  Thank goodness it is no longer just a passing fad, it is here to stay!  And the same thing will happen with Home Staging, it's going to grow by leaps and bounds; I truly believe that.

How nice to have a place to go to share ideas, help eachother and get started whether you're new or old to Home Staging.

As soon as I learn how to navigate this site, I will surely be posting more and hope to be able to invite many of you!

Thank you and many Blessings,
