One Of The Best Ways to Seeing Wildlife in Alaska
One of the best ways to see wildlife in Alaska is by traveling off the beaten path. Denali National Park and Preserve will offer that amazing opportunity. As shared in a previous blog, there is a huge mis-conception that wildlife is in abundance, roaming all around Alaska and ready to appear at every turn.
The fact is, Alaska is a harsh environment for both humans and animals to survive in. The main four animals that call Alaska home are the Wolf, Karbiu, Moose and Bear. The park rangers and locals all said, the realistic outlook for seeing any animals, especially the four main ones, is extremely rare.
An interesting tidbit of insight also came when we were told by locals we had a better chance of seeing wildlife when it rained vs being a perfectly beautiful sunshiny day. Boy where they correct. For almost the entire trip we saw nothing until we arrived at Denali National Park and Preserve and graced with rain for 2 days straight.
We took the Toklat Bus Tour, which travels 52 miles in, about a 5-6 hour bus tour. This tour brings you a tad more than half way into this 6 million acre park and preserve. Along the way, we were blessed to see all four animals.
Remember what I said about getting off the beaten path? For us to spot the 4th and final main animal we had to do just that. On this particular bus tour, at any point in travel you could ask the driver to pull over. He or she will let you off and you are free to do as you please, explore what you want, there are not rules when it comes to that. Of course the Park Rangers will review safety tips if you do encounter wildlife and I strongly recommend you listen and do as they say.
The conclusion to this post is, by us getting off the bus and creating our own journey and hiking trail we were able to spot a family of Karbiu grazing the lands at about 4,000 feet. What an honor it was to have been in their presence.
